My caveats are to do with all the changes from the webtoon. The dad was never straight up physically abusive. And where tf did this evil stepmom character come from? Plus, they seem to have completely flipped the dynamics between Cho-won and Do-yun. It seems like the latter has a crush on her, while she likes Seo-ha of all people? How do any of these changes help the plot? In fact, i think the story is *more* complicated now. A relatively bare and mostly fluffy plot line like the webtoon's would have been perfect for 12 episodes. So I'm cautiously excited to see where the drama goes from here. After all, it's just the first 2 eps.
I enjoyed the first two episodes, albeit with some caveats. It was cute and well produced so far. The music is gorgeous and the cinematography is amazing (maybe in my 19th life, I'll be able to afford a luxurious place like MI Hotel).
I love Ban Ji-eum's character and how everyone is just confused by her. I can watch hours of Seo-ha being taken aback by how forward she is, it's adorable. Also omg what's with all the random flamenco dancing lol? I think the girl playing young BJE stole the show tho. She was really charming.
(Unrelated but can we talk about all the ABH's wet shirt scenes? So much fanservice. I'm not complaining.)

The fact that the wife was cheating on Kido was disgusting and made me so mad. My head canon is that he assumes a new identity and hooks up with Seino Nana's character. I feel like both of them were low-key into each other anyways.
This movie won like a dozen times at a Japanese film awards ceremony and they were definitely deserved. The acting, the storytelling, the direction were all amazing.
I do feel like all the hype gave me overly high expectations though. Like, this is a very slow burn, low-key movie and there were times I checked out and was tempted to check my phone. But, at the same time, I didn't even dare go to the washroom bc I *needed* to know what happened next. Like, this is a very good mystery/thriller in that sense.
Along, the way this story asks a lot about identity in many different ways. The identity of immigrants in a very racist society, Yuto's dilemma, escaping your past, etc. Very hard hitting stuff; I won't pretend like I understood everything tho 😅
A lot of ppl complained about the ML kinda derailing the story and the focus should have been on Sakura Ando. I kinda agree - her acting and charm was outta this world. I would have appreciated more time spent with her. But anyways, ML made the story as interesting as it was.
I'm like 60% sure every Japanese character in this movie committed a war crime of one sort or another in Manchuria but that didn't stop me from crying my eyes out. this movie is very effective at getting you in the feels - it's so brutal, tragic, funny, heartwarming and tear-jerking. the acting is mostly amazing and the cinematography was gorgeous. you will sympathize with the characters' plight so much, your brain will be able to put aside Unit 731 and Nanking aside atleast for a few minutes. 8.4/10.

Overall, I'd give this a 8.5/10.
P.S. Seino Nana looked so pretty here.
