I'm new to K-drama so excuse me if I come off as someone hating on K-drama but is it me or are most K-dramas just…
Hey! I love dark and depressing! Thats why I lean towards J-dramas more than K-dramas since they know how to make dark and depressing mysteries, horrors and thrillers. If you know more dark and depressing stuff out of these three genres I mentioned for K-dramas, I would really really appreciate it. =)

It appears that romance is simply not your cup of tea. You can try watching k-dramas with no romance tag, like…
Romance isn't not my cup of tea per se but I dislike cringy romance shown in most lovey-dubby type K-dramas. But thank you so very much for the recommendations. That was helpful. :)

I think you would be disappointed with Hotel Del Luna since romance is the main genre of the drama, horror is…
I'm guessing the horror is not something which makes you jump or actually feel scared. Is it along the lines of a horror thriller or is the horror not really effective at all? Also, is the romance element cringy? I have no issue with romance but I can't stand cringy romance. The reason I wanna give this show a shot was because I loved IU in My Mister and Persona. Thanks for the recommendations by the way. Already watched Stranger a long time ago. Loe Bae Doona. Signal has a Japanese version as well. Which one is superior? Which one should I watch first? Gonna add Misaeng to my To Watch List. =)

It is just you. lol. It is NOT that they are mediocre, just that you are probably not watching the appropriate…
Its not just me. Not really. I mean the reason I used the words "mediocre" and "overrated" is because whenever I go to the mydramalist page of a popular K-drama which has a good score. The newest comments of that show will be something like "this drama started good but it dragged on" or "this drama started with a bang but it got boring and it took me forever to finish" or "this drama was going good but that ending completely ruined everything" Examples of the latter comment would be Kill It and Possessed. Its just an observation I made as a newbie. :)

No offense, but not sure why you choose to rant on how you feel towards K-drama in general here. This comment…
None taken but this was actually a conscious decision to "rant" on this page's comment section since I knew I'd get replies since this drama is hot right now and I needed help with getting recommendations to watch better Korean shows since I was a newbie and all. I basically needed recommendations for good Korean dramas according to my taste and even though I succeeded, I'm actually glad that the replies I got are more civil than expected coz I thought I'd get replies from a bunch of angry K-drama fans insulting me for dissing K-drama or something. Lol
I had a all kinds of angry K-drama fans on me on Kissasian when I attempted to post the same comment. XD

Okay if we're going to use anecdotal evidence my grandparents and my father and stepmother both have 20 year age…
Dude, just because I find a certain form of "entertainment" unpleasant and pedophilic doesn't mean I'm all PC. You really need to look up the meaning of the word PC. Even the people who actually watch them trashy student-teacher dramas here on this site wouldn't condone this in real life and here you are talking about how great age-gap relationships are. Hell, if you enjoy a 70 year old falling in love with someone old enough to be his daughter, then go right ahead but its a free world and I'm gonna express my opinion about how that form of entertainment irks the hell outta me. I'm enititled to my opinion same as you are entitled to yours. Hell, if you actually enjoy watching that, then who's to say that you won't find 20 year olds attractive at the age of 70. I mean, despite being entertainment, I would not in any sane mind support that kind of relationship in real life and if you actually do support that sorta relationship (in real life that is) then no offense but maybe you need your head checked. But like they say, different strokes for different folks. Maybe you like that sorta thing. Old men getting it on with young chicks. And hey, who am I to stop ya. Either way, lets stop this pointless debate since you were the one who couldn't handle a difference of opinion and found the need to respond to my opinion. Nobody's changing their mind here so lets put a full stop to it.

Know that I didn't meant to insult you or anything. I just find dramas about student-teacher relationships to be trash. No offence intended to you of course. But I do hate how dramas glorify student-teacher relationships and infidelity. Hell, Japan actually has a cheating culture where they think its okay to cheat on your spouses as long as you don't have "feelings" for the person you're using to cheat on your partner. So, instead of talking it out with their loved ones about whats wrong with their relationship, the Japanese as shy as they are prefer to show a smiling face and act as if everything is alright all while cheating on their loved ones. Not to mention how lenient they are when it comes to the legal age. I'm guessing thats why so many student-teacher dramas come out of Japan. Hell, child pornography only became illegal recently in 2014 in Japan. Not dissing Japan or anything since I love the hell out of Japan and its culture but no country is perfect and I'm just stating its problems. =)

lol calm down, there are 'worse' things being used as story theme
I'm perfectly calm. I like how people use "calm down" to talk down to a person explaining or ellaborating on something. XD
Excuse me if I sound triggered over pedophilic dramas about an adult teacher dating a barely legal student. Lol

What about them age-gap student-teacher dramas? Personally, I find them trashy and borderline pedophilia to show a barely legal high school student fall in love with an adult teacher or vice-versa. Are you taken seriously as an actor if you do one of those? I believe they are prominent mostly in Japan but I may be wrong since I'm new to dramas but this is just my observation. I do wonder however what the thought process of an actor in a lead role in such a drama would be like. Probably something like "Oh boy! I can't wait to pretend to fall in love with a barely legal pretend student" but then again, this is just me guessing. LoL

On Hotel del Luna Jul 29, 2019
I'm new to K-drama so excuse me if I come off as someone hating on K-drama but is it me or are most K-dramas just mediocre and overrated. So many shows are about that lovey dubby romance. Even genres like supernatural horror like this one which have no need for romance have romance in them. And most K-dramas start strong but tend to get boring or mediocre. I think the 16-32 episode format has something to do with this since writers just fill the show with fillers to somehow make the show16-32 episodes long which leads to pacing issues and makes the show drag on. This is a classic case of quantity over quality. If you know any mature dramas which are not filled with that lovey-dubby romance, then it would be much appreciated. One such drama which I liked would be Mistress which was mature and kept me at the edge of my seat with each episode unravelling the mystery. I haven't started watching Hotel Del Luna yet but is this show scary since it has the supernatural horror tag and is the romance just cringy lovey dubby stuff? Again, I am not hating on K-dramas so no need to act as if I am. This is simply just an observation I made as a newbie to K-dramas. =)

And yet, here you are making comparisons on fictional characters in fantasized dramas. I don't see anyone making comparisons between Halo's characters and Mass Effect characters like you did for these two dramas. Lol no offense intended.
And you should see some of the crazies on this site that actually believe that the way relationships potrayed in dramas is how they work in real life as well. Hell, there was this one person who actually was trying to convince me why student-teacher relationships are great. XD

So does that mean that that Jerry Yan's career is down the crapper since he's still doing them lovey dubby romance dramas. He's starring alongside Shen Yue in The Exchange Luck. Personally, the dude is almost old enought to be her dad with the 20 year age difference but thats just my opinion and its not like I'm gonna watch that tho. I saw a whole lotta negative comments on the show's pairing on dramapanda. But its not like they'll stop production just because of a bunch of netizens. Lol

I swear, in the future, they'll make a drama about a 70 year old falling in love with a 20 year old and people will still love it. XD

And here I thought that anime was a completely ridiculous male fantasy with its harem genre and what not. Trashy student-teacher dramas like these are no different from being a fantasy. I have no problem with age gaps between ADULTS. Within reason. The tendency to pair older men with younger women, while generally frowning on older women/younger men pairings is blatantly misogynistic. We get it, women have an expiration date, so the younger the better, whereas men are allowed to lust after young women even when they’re old and frail. (Sure, a lot of people recognize those old men are creeps, but there's no real stigma involved.) Regardless of gender, I’ll take an age gap between a 30yo and 45yo. But an 18yo and a 30yo? No.

Meanwhile, student/teacher stories are invariably garbage, and, yes, that includes student/teacher stories where the student is 17 or 18! Because there’s a big difference between a 17/18-year-old brain and the brain of someone in their mid-twenties. That, and there’s an inherent power imbalance that will always, ALWAYS translate to the older teacher taking advantage of the younger student. It’s predatory by nature.

If you (general you) want forbidden love between students and teachers, then go with college. If that isn't forbidden enough, then maybe what you want is just, you know, pedophilia...

In reality, no sane adult teacher would actually reciprocate the "feelings" of a barely legal high school student and the student-teacher encounters that do happen often lead to the arrest of the teacher for sexual assault or rape of the student. Its not an overdramatic love story these fictionalized fantasy dramas potray them to be.
