It is the term that is at the moment mainstream and in use. Also, the idea is: we truly DISLIKE the show, at times…
The different shades of hate. Yep, this is what I was trying to differentiate at 5am lol

I never hate-watch anything because I think it's a horrible waste of time LOL I just have one thing to say - hate…
I occasionally leave the timed comments on for a few different reasons, not the least of which is that it's nice to feel I've shared it with other people from around the world. I also enjoy hearing people's opinion on something that is happening, even if we're not really watching it together.
It really does ruin it though when there are people who put comments in that are meant solely to be callous or cruel and have no bearing on the actual production. I believe the spirit for which timed comments is intended is to unite, not tear things or people apart, or make others sad. The world is dark enough already; it would be nice if the blind rage and venom was reserved for something like a blog site or static comment section. In things like romance genres especially, there is already a stigma that has always been attached to them, else so many wouldn't consider it a guilty pleasure. This is just exacerbating it. Freedom of speech is a beautiful thing, but it should also come with a sense of responsibility and care.

Hate is such a strong word for this. Tbh, when I first read the title, I thought of something other than what you intended: the people who watch the shows and in the timed comments on viki start talking about how ugly the people in it are to them, how stupid the show is, or conversely, how much better this blah blah blah is than some other country's idea of blah blah blah. The actual hate trolling, vs the occasional objective criticism. There is a vast difference between analyzing a show's good and bad points, and spewing blind and vituperous hate all over a production and ruining it for others. For instance, I doubt any but the most diehard of watchers would object to someone having a giggle over a suspension line being seen when someone is 'levitating', or an obvious plot inconsistency. On the other hand, saying something like "that girl's nose is so big, how is she the main lead" is just wrong on so many levels.

Hey Cho Na! I always click on any article you write. They're always so fun. Thanks for everything you put out on this site :)

Perhaps this is a little off-subject from the cheerful nature of enjoying the boys, but I'm putting my thoughts out there anyway. I think it's late enough in the release of this article to not waylay it by talking about a conjunctive subject. I hope I don't offend most of the readership.
For so many years now I have enjoyed Chinese dramas, and I have developed such a respect and affection for the culture, stories, and people. I wish there were some way I could divorce everything I've learned over the past year about how people are being treated there and abroad from my enjoyment of Chinese arts, but among other things the constant pervasive and still growing censorship always reminds me. Maybe it's an odd analogy, but it was like finding out the pen-pal* you've befriended and really started caring about has been tormenting other friends you've made, and now you can't help being reminded of it in the little things they say and do. It's a controversial subject, I know, and I fully expect to be wolf warrior-ed and berated as I have been before, but I write this from the heart. I keep watching, because I want to live in a world where love wins over betrayal, and people are judged on an individual basis and not as a whole. It's a sort of heartbreak happening daily. Is anyone else torn like this?
I hate to be the dark and sad one, especially here, it's honestly against my usual nature, but sometimes admitting to how you feel about something helps you get out from under the weight of it.

On a lighter note, Vengo Gao is amazing. He has such a nuance for subtlety when he's given the chance to use it, as in Pillow Book. And he made me laugh hysterically in Fuyao.
Steven Zhang seems to be unusually complex and a still water that runs deep. He can tug at your heartstrings when he's given something intense to work with.
Zhu YiLong was able to make me feel conflicted about who I wanted to win the girl in Ming Lan, which is remarkable, considering that he was up against a real-life couple I also adore. Major props. Not sure how he hasn't been cast as a ML yet.
I don't think I have seen or remember any of the other actors, and now I'm starting to feel old! >.<

Of all the ones listed, The Shadow, The Outsider and maybe Back from the Brink are possibilities because the stories sound interesting. I'd give them a go.
Again, thanks for the article! <3

*an old-ish term, it used to be encouraged in schools for students to write other international ones to learn about cultures and people

This list is going to send me down the drama rabbit hole again for sure. What an amazing group of guys, and they're diverse too from what I can see. I have a big soft spot for Taiwan so this immediately pulled me right in. Thanks Cho Na!

Any links to a *safe* place to watch these? I don't see any of them with a known streaming site on mdl. Maybe that's why so few people have seen them lol
(If anyone says one of the sites with misappropriated subs I'll glare in your general direction ^.^)

Even if the drama is available it will be in illegal sites which they steal from original subbers. But like I…
oh that looks good! it probably sounds terribly shallow of me but i love a show that has interesting and fun fashion in it. sometimes i see something where the female lead is in what looks like a glorified sack (there is a devastating plethora of them) and it makes me so sad. alternatively, it's inspiring to see people show confidence and pride in themselves and what they want to bring to the world.
i'm finishing up Jimi ni Sugoi! Koetsu Garu Kono Etsuko atm- it has so much style with the female lead, and she's fiesty too. i look forward to your recap and i added it to my watchlist, i'm in drama heaven now lol

i avoid those sites like the plague. they're so dodgy. finding those translations that have hidden gems of knowledge is so fabulous i can't even. i'm adding this subber's site to my shortlist for dramas, so glad you gifted it to us. i wouldn't mind the japanese one either... *innocent smile*

i gotcha, i was checking on viki and iqiyi, my normal suppliers for my addiction, and i'm pretty sure they don't steal em. yikes. i love those little tidbits of insight that some subbers do too! i am constantly looking things up and it satisfies my endless curiosity. thanks again :)

Hey friend! ^.^ First I want to say thank you for posting the links to the fansite where we can watch this drama, it was not available anywhere else for me! I wish there were more shout outs like this one to the subbers, their dedication and generosity always seems so underrated and unappreciated.
Second, this looks amazing, and thanks for drawing it out there for us. Mature dramas are so few and far between lately. Succinct, fun and my favorite article this week. You rock. <3 i'll definitely be watching this one next

I think it's the censorship that cut a large chunk of this drama as a result we have to guess many things that…
i actually watch for strong female lead roles, any eye candy is just a side bonus. It's fun when side characters are as fun as the main leads, like Shen TingBai and ManTing in Arsenal, and just about everyone in Yanxi. I did stop at 47, full brake. My immersion just shattered in the confusion. That's why I came here, to see if it was worth finishing or explained later, or if something eventually validated the insanity ^.^

I like this approach to diversity. It makes sense in the context of the drama, and even though I know there will…
I love to see diversity in shows, absolutely love it. I watch everything from anywhere as long as it has a good plot. As long as the role and person playing it makes sense. I don't get putting any random ethnicity into a role that doesn't jibe, it just keeps me a step away from immersion. That and sterotyping.... it's much better imho if they keep it real. with all the people finding new interests in dramas from all around the globe, i hope that it brings new understanding and integration, in dramas and real life ^.^

this makes me a lil sad. Tell me if the cut parts make it worth reading? At this point i don't want any more disappointments, 40-odd wasted hours already lol

ok so episode 47, what the hell? Censorship's worst at work again or what? Seems to go beyond just bad editing. I have to stop watching because I'm totally lost with what's going on and I feel like I missed something, but from the comments (Viki) everyone else is confused too. Hoping someone has figured out what happened and if it's misnumbered episodes or something.
