It's a great line, screenplay wise. Shocking, surprising.
Obviously understandable with your explanation.
But it makes also a link with him taking care of sick old ladies.
Just saying my opinion: it's great writing! 😉

The whole thing is thanks to the writer. People often confuse what do writer or director. First it's a screenwriter, not novel one, so most of what we get on screen comes from the writer. Then the director put his talent too.

Here a point, I wonder about how it's in the script:
When HyeonO stops in the stair. I wondered if the writer put an intention or not at this point, because it's possible to do it like that:
- HyeonO, !!, stops short. She doesn't notice and continues to climb the stairs.
But there isn't a close up on his face, so it should rather be:
- HyeonO stops. She doesn't notice and continues to climb the stairs.
Or course, not exact wording, but something like that.
Maybe writer precised more about her state of mind too.

Now what did the director with that, because he has a good understanding of the script (not only this scene, but as a whole):
As the writer didn't focused on HyeonO expression as he stops, the director chose to show only his shoes at first, when she continues to climb. He also put HyeonO in a blur. It suggests that now, HyeonO became a blur in her mind. He vanishes as a real man. Becomes a kind of dream she's the only one to have. The effect is strong.

Just to say the writer isn't the only one to manipulate what run above our eyes but under our mind when we watch. But at least I could explain what roles have the two different creators of the show. Writer and director.

Some external items used to reinforce internal of character + useful for TV writing that needs to be visual. My interpretation can be imperfect, but as it's obvious the writer put that on purpose with strong links....

I've even have a theory that some metaphors don't need to be explict, but they run under audience surface mind, giving depth to a story.

Just like the scene in the stairs. She speaks about mariage, and he stops. We can get a surface understanding. Ok, it's normal, he said he doesn't want that, so he doesn't want to hear more about that.

But deeper sens run under that, we maybe don't catch it, but it stays with us. First the stairs, it's like a metaphor of life, climbing toward greater goals, but he won't climb with her. It's like he refuses normal way of life. It plays wrong for him here.

But notice also: she continues to speak, speak, speak, and doesn't even notice he stopped. So she's in a foolish and selfish dream, not taking account of reality and care more about her dream than him. It plays wrong for her here.

Each of those details were skillfully introduced by the writer on purpose.
It's why I take notes, because on a normal binge watch, I'd miss that. So be normal audience, without awarness of what run under the surface of my mind and the writer used.

Something like: as he got out the pendant and put it in the car Ep3, probably a way to say he opens the door to her, and ready to do something she wanted but he refused before (put the pendant in the car). Now, she closed the door, and this time of opportunity is gone on his side, like he won't try again to comes to her, so he put away the pendant of the car.

It's what I saw too. So I suppose he have a similar emotional bond, and it's like they are his family, almost his real grandmas?

First it wasn't fair to ask the boy to pay his father's debt. 😩

It happens "sometime" in life, but for sure: it "always" happens in kdramas. 😁

There are natural sounds, wind, ambiant from the street, etc. I'm ok with that.

Cho Hye-Joo acting is great. You see it in comedy scenes, with lot of micro-attitudes.

It won't happen but I'm sure the writer is kind and will make it so you are not too sad. 🤗

So, she's yelling non-stop and he can't even explain! lol.
Yeah, her lines were a good flow. To rewatch for pleasure.

I'm mitigate because all the backstory long inserts are also slowing down.
So my preference goes to episode 2-4, with shorter (more mysterious) flashbacks.
