I ended it. Difficult to rate, I enjoyed the watching and thematics I was not used to see in historicals. Nevertheless, I can just say it won't be my favorite sageuk, although it makes sens it can be favorite for other people with such a quality.
There was a hole of slowness of several episodes around ep12, but hopefully, next were the most intense episodes and high emotions in the last part. I hope fans of the drama can enjoy my live comments (a bit messy), and find again the pleasure to rewind the drama in their mind. Sometimes I mentioned remarquable qualities, and of course few flaws bothering me, but maybe not other people.
Never been able to tolerate the FL's face 😂 She is the ugliest kdrama actress.Couldn't complete more than 3-4…
I find her ok, but everybody has his own taste. It's also a problem for me when there is a romance and I find the FL ugly. Because somehow, it's hard to believe the romance.
Ep16, Now I enter two last episodes. Dramatics are strong and I'm curious. I will complete this comment over time, as I watch. Since few episodes, main actor is better, but it's also scenes demanding him to express more emotion. Before that, I'll suppose his character is supposed to be more introvert.
Episode quickly makes me mad. Duk Im refuses old queen support? WTF? She will endure worst time ever now. I can't even pity her. She's a stubborn mule and her decisions are beyond my understanding.
Yeaahhh, consequences are rude. Now old queen accuses Duk Im to have sex with a random man. Gosh, there is tension but how I could pity Duk Im? She did everything to put herself in difficult situations, even it's unfair ones. Damnit. The BLUE sleeves (flashback of her brother).
Royal consor (+old queen) tried something but it fails, thanks to previous prince's mother. What makes Duk Im just the toy of someone else. Consor is really a bitch, and she's lucky the king wasn't more angry about her. Old queen know how to use people and what people she could use. Royal consor is no use anymore for her, so she will end badly. hehe.
Bath scene. "king made his decision".... wait... they prepare her for bed scene? Ahahahaha... King finally decided there was nothing more he could do now. He'll forces her? Well... we could see she enjoyed the kiss, so....... It's all-in. Nothing fair, but at this point, could be success, could be failure, anyway... I notice on this scene: no boring music but a nice OST song. Lady Seo give her a last advice: "to serve the king, you must do anything". 😅 Oooh damnit!! this fkn drama!! My little finger says me it won't happen at last moment. But who know?
Nope, it really happens! But nothing that dramatic. He still gives her the choice at last moment, and she realizes she could never see him again. I'm in the dark about Duk Im feelings. Later she says, "if I love him, I can't tell him". I forgot to take notes until end of episode, but lot of sweet moments.
I didn't talk a lot about cinematography. Of course, budget and good cameras makes this gorgeous. Can also be a problem as there are many large or slow shots, hurting the pace. But I wanted to give an example related to intelligence of directing: The scene when dowage queen says she feels in the palace like a prison. Notice how end the scene: on a shot with the camera sliding behind a kind of shelf. I don't know exactly if it's a shelf by the way, but just, it put in foreground something looking like prison bars, and the dowage queen in the background, like locked up.
Ep17. Starts on dramatic moment after time gap: their son dies from a typical child illness. However Duk Him is pregnant again. More misfortune, her lady-court friend had an affair and should be executed. Episode tries to depress us. Next, Pest in the country, everybody's sick. The King, Duk Im too (but not from pest).
Eventually, Duk Im dies, but her last words are terrible. First she doesn't want to see the king but the other court lady. Then she confess her love to the king but says "if you see me in another life, just walk away". What kind of love is it? I can't trust her confession. Frustrating, I'm not even sad and it's halfway of episode.
Then years pass. The king forget her, but remembers her sometimes. Slow walks, flashbacks, souvenirs, tears......... We still learn he was an amazing king for the people.
I like the last line of the drama: "this moment is forever". I take it in the way that death can undo life, but can't undo existence.
Is it really a so sad ending? There are many time gap, and eventually, when you wait long enough, everybody dies! Of course, it's sad to die that young and marriage duration was 4 years according history. Yet, they had time to live that. Just I'm concerned by the fact that in the end, I see that almost like a one sided love story, so much it's into a gray area. What's an original story.
Ep14. Four last episodes. I'll try to binge-watch and ends it today. We think she's daydreaming, but twist! The king is here. She's lucky he continues to comes back to her, because now it could be over. Let's see if she continues to reject him. hehe.
At this point, motivation of the FL is weird: she was lover of writing and books and it was clear to be court lady wasn't something she likes (about serve plates and drinks, stay still in the room with nothing to do). In any way her situation as concubine would be better, but she prefer to live this boring life. Woudn't be it a win-win? She would have king love and a better life for herself.
Hong continues to grab power and interferes in what he shouldn't. I don't know about you, but I find this guy annoying from the very start, even when he was a child. In first episode, he somehow falsified the friendship the king has for him. A little something is telling to my ear that it will end badly for him.
It seems I made a confusion (coming from subtitles). Won Bin isn't queen but royal concubine?
Rejection again. She doesn't say she don't love him, just she doesn't want to be his wife. For me, it sounds the same. It's frustrating, and as we had chilhood of them, we could expect it turns into a successful love story, but the more it goes, the more it sounds it won't. Maybe the King should forget her? He could send her out of the palace to better forget her. It would be a situation of loose-loose, but at this point, what to do else? Sure, he could force her, but it makes no sens. He tried a bit but stopped that. I think he's mature enough to understand it's useless if love doesn't come from her. Now, I don't know if he will end to do that, in case his mental health deteriorate. What would be intense drama and failure all the way.
I like this situation I've never meet before: the court lady rejects the king. The supposed love story ready and on the track turns into something else. So, scenes are interesting to watch and I'm curious about the conclusion.
Dramatics hit again, how I like it. Won Bin in critical state. It resonnates with the previous scene of Duk Im and the King when he says he doesn't give a shit about Won bin depression. It has also great potential to break Hong and King relationship.
Ayaaa, shit, I said I wouldn't complain again about that. But see the scene when Won Bin dies and Hong becomes mad with sadness. Everything's perfect, acting first. But wasted by the damn background music out of place. I don't remember where I've read that: we often notice beautiful pictures, directing, acting, etc, but like a hidden element, sounds are up to 50% of the experience in movies.
Now it says again Won Bin was queen. Well, I don't know. But subtitles say more often she's queen than royal concubine, so I'll take it like that. Anyway, she's dead now.
I notice FL is a bit more pretty now. She wears make-up.
Ayya, Hong didn't burn the secret lair. Everything ministers said to the king is true. He's now in charge of old Cho organisation but obviously makes something different out of it. Now, we should enjoy a hard time for him. Follow scene King + Hong supported by dramatic irony, as Hong see nothing coming and just gives worst answers to the king, who just say in resume "ok, I know who you are now". When he leaves, I think he has like a bad feeling.
Not too much complications when Duk Im is captured by Hong, as the King saves the situation, quite logical as he knew the lair. Hong is totally delirious when he pleads his case in the throne room. He can't even believe at first he will die, and anything the king says, he continues to have some hope and plead again and say absurdities. Good scene. Unexpected conclusion. I find the king too kind here. Hong deserves death. Then, he could exil him, or makes him commoner, but nobleman? Nope, he will continue to be a bad man with slaves. Maybe he did that for the resignation, more easy to accept in the court. It seems to be a real historical fact, as there was a short text (not translated).
Excellent argument scene King + Duk Im and this conclusion!! Hey, this scene makes the drama! Best scene until now. I'm not technical expert of kisses, but this one strikes the screen. It breaks FL dellusions but will she changes her mind?
Ep15. Gosh, the twist I should see coming but nope, I didn't see it coming NOW. He asks her to leave the palace! A solution I envisionned before, but happening now?! All her fights for court ladies are useless now, she won't take care of them anymore. Really, it was better to be concubine. But hey, I guess it's from historical facts, so I enjoy how this kind of mess could have happened, anyhow characters choices seems irrational but with some motivations hard to swallow. King finds the missing page of the banned book in Duk Im room. Then TIME GAP.
Hong meets Duk Im on marketplace, Ew, he's so viscous.
I can just laugh here, the king is in Princess residence, sure of his conviction when he talks about his future concubine and... Duk Im enters by chance the courtyard. How painful!
Princess advices Duk Im to ask forgiveness to the king, but this mule is so stubborn. I need an expert opinion here, isn't it "noble idiocy"?
Scene in the garden at night. She asks to the king "then punish me". I wonder if a kiss could be a good punishement? I bet on that. Let's watch it now...
... waaah! I was below it. He want the bed scene right now! ahah! But pfff... He doesn't do it. Maybe it was the right thing to do? Last time he forced the kiss and finally she was all-in too. I don't know what this poor king could do at this point. If she's a lost cause for him, send her in China, that's it. Yeah, partial opinion, I take party for the king. God send this kind of woman on earth just to turns men crazy! 😄
How could he understands what she want when I even can't as drama audience?! Anything she wanted is out now, and I can't see why she continues to reject him, except that: She really don't love him. As she said, she never loved him. She was close, but with a little selfish stepback, justified by selfness for court ladies, a fake cause that doesn't exist anymore now she's out of the palace. But anyone can make its opinion about that, and it's what I like about dramas when the thematic are well made. Writer doesn't give us a party, the thematic is deep and anyone can think without a premade jugdement telling us what to think.
Hong has again crazy illusions. He thinks Duk Im could be interested to run away with him? Dude, put your feet back on earth, for God's sake! How bad, now if he dies, it's her fault? Aayya, this guy, painful to the end.
The King makes resolution to find another woman he love. Yeah! It could take time, as he needs to forget Duk Im now, but it's a good plan. Along the path, probably he will make pregnant two or three concubines. 😅 I'd like to take dowager queen as royal consort but I'm 99% sure it's impossible according the court rules. Well, I'm not expert but seems obvious. Or I'd need to be a crazy king killing anyone telling a word I don't like. Dowager queen is my darling in this drama. 🥰 Actress is beautiful and acts well, with sweet and believable attitudes we get in historicals.
I say that because I don't find the new royal consort pretty. But about plot, it's on a good way, as Duk Im is her servant now. I'm curious!!!! Maybe the king will have intercourse with her? To make Duk Im jalous? Or I don't know what? New royal consort could also treat Duk Im badly out of jalousy. I presume: if she was assigned to royal consort, it's because the King wanted it.
Ayaaaa, I was wrong. And I love to be wrong. It means I'm surprised. It's the dowager queen who made Duk Im return in the palace. Plus, we get a scene with dowager queen, what I like a lot. But twist again (woo!), it's not her who asked for return of Duk Him. Mystery... let's keep watching. 🤤
King could order she enter the bath with him but no. "go away" instead. Then royal consort beats her hard! Out of jalousy, as I expected. Gosh, if she was concubine, nothing of that happened. Maybe other problems but not that. As a court lady, she has zero power and is doomed.
The previous setup about Hong death comes into action. Yeah, he's dead now. I bet even after death, he will poison people mind, the king, Duk Im (already made). Oooahhhwwaahh. No. Shit. It turns out on something very moving. First time Hong understand. The letter tells how he was fake from the start, childhood. Emotional scene. Hong is sincere and reveal the truth about the torn page (it's why we get a scene with that previously). Writer hold a gun and it's the last bullet. A bullet kept safe from episode 1. Brillant!
We learn the truth now: the mother is the one who call back Duk Im in the palace. (I'm a bit lost, was it ex-wife of mad prince, or the one who took care of Duk Im as a child?). She tells the king to meet happyness. Her definition is "meet a woman you love and found a family", what I'm agree about, but... the problem is just Duk Im doesn't want!!
Ep15 cliffhanger. Looks like a lost cause but... she hugs him. Well.... I don't believe it anymore... if it's just false hope, nope. The king didn't do it yet, but I have mourned this failed love story. For me Duk Im is now an unpredictable bizarre insect. Else it was a good scene, with reflects in the lake, to make remember first time she knows him.
At one point, old Sun Woo disconnects from young Sun Woo. It happens after old Sun Woo dies the first time. After,…
Yes. Of course there are not the same of the ones of the previous timeline, but close. Just they didn't live the time travels, and SunWoo took some choices making him survive from his brain problem, and helped his brother to survive. Else, they have certainly their best life now. This writer often do that: go into a sad ending, but a very last twist turns it into a happy one, but with a bit of sacrifice and bittersweet.
Though Hong Deok Ro might be an ambitious individual, he was quite a capable minister who helped King Jeongjo…
Hi, I saw in comments you are a big fan of the drama. It's fav drama of a friend, it's why I watch, and also I'm a bit Sageuk addict. But don't give me spoilers please. I don't know this historical era. I'll probably read a bit about that after I completed the drama. 😉
Can anybody explain the ending? I have seen comments saying Sunwoo dies in the past. But, how is the young Sunwoo…
At one point, old Sun Woo disconnects from young Sun Woo. It happens after old Sun Woo dies the first time. After, old Sun Woo can't refresh his memory with his younger self. When old Sun Woo dies for good, his younger self still knows time travel exist. Now all incense sticks have burned, there isn't anymore repercussions from the past to the future. The future isn't written yet and the timeline of young Sun Woo is the only one.
He meets Min Young in the same way (door in the face, lol). However, something's different: Min Young remembers something coming from the last time travel: Sun Woo death. And she remembers to see him when she was a child. Anyway, Min Young ends to reveal to him why she's scared to date him, because she saw him dead.
Sun Woo understands then that the last time travel of his other self ended badly, by his death. I don't remember how (need to rewatch) but he makes also conclusion of the situation of his brother in Nepal. Then last scene, he's the mysterious man saving his brother. In episode 1 we saw someone approaching his brother, it was him. Only, the scene in episode 1 was a flashforward, not what happened in the previous timeline. It's tricky.
What means, of course, the writer did the whole drama structure first. Quite obvious it's needed for such a story. And about flashforward, she used that also in Memories of the Alhambra at the end of episode 2, and it was for a scene we see in episode 10.
Best time travel drama but with a slow start during 3 first episodes. At this time (2013), audience was more patient and ok for slow starts, ready to discover. We still have small bits of time travel and mystery during this time. It's only after watching, or rewatching we get the idea why the drama start this way. Indeed, the relationships need to be set first, for the time changes to make sens after.
Yes. I like both actress, and the one in season 1 was good for that part of the drama. But when comes the love…
I don't trust chemistry. It's just we have here two amazing lead actors, good writing and directing. Unless the male actor is bad, GYJ is the kind of actress who makes me trust the romance. Look at her in Death Games. Just in less than 30 minutes, she gives us a true love story, thanks to the good writing too.
Am I right in thinking this is a makjang/soap opera style of show?
I don't classify it as makjang. I watched movies in this genre from my country but don't know to name it exactly in english. Should be "comedy of manners" genre. It's a bit like Sky Castle or The Glory, other dramas of this kind I can't classify as makjang. I watched many makjang and I like the genre, but I don't get this feeling with this drama.
Here, it's not a soap opera, it focus on less characters. It takes seriously the thematic of a man having a love affair. Then, there are also twists and impactful or dramatic scenes. But can we say it's makjang, or just twists and drama? Maybe you could watch it and decide by yourself. I think you could have a good time.
a solid one.I don't get it how a well created drama like this gets so low ratings? As for revenge drama the script…
People were disappointed about various things: Expecting Seo Yea Ji in a drama like her previous one. I don't care. I like her role here. Expecting someone else for the male lead. I don't care, the actor was good. It's a makjang, but with a slower pace than ordinary makjang. It's my only criticism.
Season 2 had good moments but alas, also draggy ones if I compare to season 1. Now I watched many dramas of Hong sisters, they often write amazing parts of a story, but in some dramas get lost in late part. Not that what they do then has no meaning, but it's boring. Big plus for me was Go Youn Jung, who was the original Naksu in first episode of season 1. She has this feminine charm that makes me believe a romance.
Ep12 starts with a bang! Now the king confuses him with his son, scary. Woo, the scene is good and even Prince acting too now. Sadly, the music is again out of topic.
"the document of truth is..." TWIST... Lady Jo enters, and breaks my nerves.
Wait, she makes a false accusation, but takes opportunity the king is busy to discretly leave the throne room now. Ah! As a revenge for us about bad actions of Princess Whawa, she must do what she fears and hate the most: gives the royal seal to the new king. hehehehe.
Lady Jo is under arrest, as a result of the king investigation. Scene of her death is nice, but I'm not a lot moved. Bad choice of music again. I'll stop to say that, it's a general problem of the drama.
Scene with King and grand-son. A strong one. He says he won't forgive grandfather, and also he fears everything. Yet, he's not a coward, but it's true we feel fear or hesitation in him since a long time.
Ep13. After two slow and sleepy episodes, the drama comes back to life. Good comedy scene with King and Bodyguard sure to be expert about seduction. Then I missed a step because I don't know how the guard guess the court lady is a killer.
Hong meets his parent. The dialog looks like he's just in exil, but surprising: At the end, guards come with a bowl. I guess a bowl of poison, for a honorable death. Next, Princess Whamwa son is dead in exil. Mmh, sounds like the King ordered his death. Transition between the two scenes is a bit confusing, giving sens Hong Parent is the son. From now on, ML is more and more sinister, and FL can't really stand that.
Then, ML is drunk. It's the idea I had since the start: Due to difficult past and education, he's not as strong as many kings we see in historicals. Killing is an inner conflict difficult to accept.
King almost force a kiss with Duk Im, once drunk. We saw in a previous scene he was threatening her (many episodes ago). Something dark and twisted in this, making I enjoy the dramatic. However, he falls asleep dead drunk, and the scene didn't push to make him doing something bad. At this point I was ready for anything, as it could turn into tragedy. And excellent parallelism to underline here: In the comedy scene with bodyguard, bodyguard advice to look weak and pityfull to make a woman have interest in you. And as irony, it's exactly what happens now.
Ouch. The dowager queen (so pretty she should be the FL, lol) killed morally the king: In resume: "you killed many people to survive, but you didn't achieved anything".
It was fast and put into ellipsis: we have a young queen now. This girl was shown before with Duk Im but I forgot the scene. Now Duk Im wait for the king all night, while he's at the queen bedroom. Tssaahhhhhhh!!! But she could get him if she wanted. So, what to say? She suffers, and her decision leads her to that. I'm asking myself if she really love the king, and I don't think now. Maybe she loved it once, in the past but not enough. Now I just keep watching to see that more clearly.
Ep10. There was tension when they visit the secret lair. There is no one in this place, it's strange. I have no idea how they run away from this. They need to use another exit than the way they enter in. I was expecting it would be difficult, but it just cuts when Lady Jo finds the empty cell. We don't know if they could get the list of names. There were high-chance they could be catch, but they would end their days in a cell, like Lady Park. So, end of the drama! Also, Lady Jo asked to look for Duk Im, but this point is like forgotten.
Ep11. 3th degree burn, but the Prince takes it easy. Later, what I was waiting: Lady Jo meets Duk Im. At this point, Lady Jo should be 100% sure Duk Im liberated Lady Park. By the way, last night, she asked for Duk Im, but she couldn't be find. We didn't see it but it's logic.
With such a lunatic king, drama is always next door. ^^
Now a scene with Duk Im and court lady Seo. She says she could love the Prince without needing to be royal consort (concubine). While she's already in big trouble because of Lady Jo. I find Duk Im deluding herself. Her only way to live this love now is to get enough power to stay in the palace. I'm curious to know where it leads, but I find it strange.
Ouch... many sleepy scenes one after the other in this episode. The sleepy feeling is strong, with the soft music, and every people on the set seems tired. Plus, it's at night. It's great luck I watch that at morning. The guy delivering the most energy is the 83 years old king in a flashback. 😄
Something bother me: what are the consequences of the attack on the prince? I remember Lady Jo wanted to win time, if the King requires an investigation. But all of that seems gone in the wind now. Another point under the carpet: The prince is supposed to be regent? I don't remember one scene where he rules the kingdom. At least an intendant giving him a paper and PAF, he stamps it.
Oh, here I find back the writer. Duk Im solve the puzzle, but when she meets the Prince at the entrance, no time to explain. Kind of twist breaking audience nerves. So, it's nice.
Pleading in the throne room. Yep, I didn't mention before but now for sure: Main actor is too light. Not really a bad actor, but he doesn't stand enough. I have this problem with many young actors in recent dramas. Cute boys but they don't have a face, enough charisma and energy. I prefer main actress about acting, or some other characters.
Next Duk Im goes to see the queen, because we need to solve the previous twist now.
See here the problem about directing/editing: - When the King throws the list of traitors and Prince reads it. (it's his secret organisation) It should be a hard impact! First the sound, we should get a big freezing effect or a bang, then something sinister and powerful, anything but not this sleepy music. - About acting, sure the actor maybe in cause, but also the director who's in charge to lead actors. So everything is well made from a esthetic point of view but often it lacks dramatism. - We see in this scene it's not a writing problem, dialog and situation is good, and the King delivers lines with his point of view, different from the Prince. The King actor is very experimented, then he doesn't need a lot of lead.
Scene with Duk Im and the Queen is interesting. She choose a risky strategy by almost saying what the Queen should do. And only when she convices her, she talk about the "document of thruth".
Last instants for the cliffhanger were well made. Let's continue with Ep12...
There was a hole of slowness of several episodes around ep12, but hopefully, next were the most intense episodes and high emotions in the last part. I notice on this scene: no boring music but a nice OST song.
Lady Seo give her a last advice: "to serve the king, you must do anything". 😅
Oooh damnit!! this fkn drama!!

Anything she wanted is out now, and I can't see why she continues to reject him, except that:
She really don't love him.
I'd like to take dowager queen as royal consort but I'm 99% sure it's impossible according the court rules. Well, I'm not expert but seems obvious. Or I'd need to be a crazy king killing anyone telling a word I don't like. Dowager queen is my darling in this drama. 🥰
Actress is beautiful and acts well, with sweet and believable attitudes we get in historicals.
This writer often do that: go into a sad ending, but a very last twist turns it into a happy one, but with a bit of sacrifice and bittersweet.
It's fav drama of a friend, it's why I watch, and also I'm a bit Sageuk addict.
But don't give me spoilers please. I don't know this historical era.
I'll probably read a bit about that after I completed the drama. 😉
Expecting Seo Yea Ji in a drama like her previous one. I don't care. I like her role here.
Expecting someone else for the male lead. I don't care, the actor was good.
It's a makjang, but with a slower pace than ordinary makjang. It's my only criticism.
But when comes the love story, I prefer a lot more GYJ.
The dialog looks like he's just in exil, but surprising:
At the end, guards come with a bowl.
It's the idea I had since the start:
Due to difficult past and education, he's not as strong as many kings we see in historicals.
And excellent parallelism to underline here:
In the comedy scene with bodyguard, bodyguard advice to look weak and pityfull to make a woman have interest in you. And as irony, it's exactly what happens now.
Ouch. The dowager queen (so pretty she should be the FL, lol) killed morally the king:
In resume: "you killed many people to survive, but you didn't achieved anything".
Yep, I didn't mention before but now for sure:
Main actor is too light.
See here the problem about directing/editing:
- When the King throws the list of traitors and Prince reads it. (it's his secret organisation)
It should be a hard impact!
