Look, first off, I don't want to rain on anyone's parade. So prepare for some harsh opinions. Contrary to a lot…
Facts! This is absolutely not a BL. And after watching episode 11 I'll even say we were baited since the beginning... People loving it aren't into it for the BL aspect. They mainly like the actors and the comedy.
With SK ratings and the great reviews on MDL I thought this drama would be wonderful but I'm disappointed. I'm at episode 12 and nothing much happened. For about 8 episodes the priest kept going circle with his attempt to prove the Father's death wasn't suicide. He quickly understood who are the bad guys (prosecutor office, police chief etc) but he kept going to them expecting what? He kept going on tantrum because things didn't go as he thought. Like, he's a ex-military but doesn't think clearly and keeps failing. Characters development is so slow it's frustrating. The cop finally grew a pair at episode 10 but the prosecutor is as bas as the vilains. I don't get why she's portrayed in a funny way, like we're supposed to like her. Finally, the comedy isn't funny any more especially when it's bad timed. I mean, they talk about very serious matters and right after that they had a bickering scene with the priest and the prosecutor. It doesn't flow well. I'd rather have less comedy and more smart action. I'm gonna drop it, I'm not interested anymore.
Much ado about nothing. This was nice but not great. Overrated drama. Apart from being a SK production, what's so special about this BL? - The acting? Yes the actors were good especially KG (he emoted better than his co-star) but many BL have good actors (Gun, Singto, Fandy...) - The filming and direction? Yes, it was good. Nothing to complain about. Other BL also have good cinematography (Crossing The Lines, The Untamed...). - The plot? Nope, it was not exciting nor mysterious. All the boxes were ticked: bestfriends to lovers + rich male lead (seems mandatory in Kdrama) + homophobic dad + girl used as a prop + impossible love... Nothing new. We barely delved into the characters: we know nothing about them except they've been together for a while and they secretly like each other. What else? What is KG's background? Since when is he HTJ bodyguard? What is HTJ family life? And KG's for that matter? What are their desires and ambitions? Hobbies? Flaws? Don't tell me they couldn't explore all this because of the episodes duration. Who told them to make this format? Wouldn't it have been better to have less episodes with a longer duration in order to set the backstory and show more about their personalities ? Imo the format isn't really the issue since other short dramas like Long Time No See and The Boy Next Door have a better narrative than WYEL.
I admit WYEL has qualities but I needed more to love it. I wasn't invested in it. So I'm wondering: once removing the fact it's a SK BL, what's so great about it people critize other countries BL and declare WYEL the best bl of all time?! Come on, let's be rational. You can love a series without bashing other ones.
I'm not someone who takes break from a show while watching....but it took me some time to finish this one. Why…
I couldn't agree more! I could have written this. Sad to see many BL fans are easily swayed by sex scenes, to the point of overlooking bad writing and directing. I love sex scenes and skinship but above all I need good writing and characters development. They even use covid as an excuse even though we could see the choppy writing from the start, way before covid impacted the filming. Everything about FigherTutor was forced. It felt like the writers wanted to compete with daring BLs such as TharnType and Together With Me for the "Most Sexy BL" award. IMO, they only win the trashy award. Thankfully SaifahZon kept me interested. Their dynamic was great: an unproblematic and supportive seme, a cute friendship developing into a beautiful relationship. Rarely did I see such a healthy couple in BL. I've heard TommyJimmy will have a mini series in 2021. I can't wait.
Nice drama even though I don't find it that great. It was lenghty and repetitive. Fresh on some aspects (Yong Shik's personality, characters subrverting tropes in hilarious ways...) but still lot of overused tropes (Dong Beak's mother return, Dong Beak's mother illness, Yonh Shik and Dong Beak mothers meeting in the past...). Unfortunately my enjoyment was decreased by the perpetual "a mother isn't a woman anymore" narrative that plagues every drama about a single mother. I've been watching kdrama for almost 20 years and I'm sad to see nothing much has changed on this subject. In korean drama, once you're a single mother you shouldn't love again and want to marry again. Your life should only be dedicated to raising your child, because aparently korean men can't love and raise another man child... And if you're daring enough to want some romance in your life, your kid and your future in-laws must approve it beforehand because of course you aren't adult enough and responsible enough to manage your life as you please... We're in 2020, I can't deal with this old-fashioned view anymore.
So disappointing. First episode was good and interesting, so I went to wattpad and read the novel. I loved it. It's basic but Nuea and Praram couple is so cute it's cringy. Unfortunately their story can't be told in 3 episodes! The whole point of it is Nuea courting Praram for months and the building UST. From the start this project was doomed.
This series is already giving me a headache: how are we supposed to ship OhmFirst if they're brothers?! Even if Ohm quickly discovers that First is in fact PrigKhing and starts falling for her, it would still be awkward since she's in his brother's body!! That's being said, I'm falling for Ohm. The guy is getting more handsome everyday and he's so good at acting. He really improved since MIR where I didn't like him (he was trying to hard, it wasn't natural).
I'm one of those people who don't find The Untamed exceptional. Is it because I read the novel before watching the drama? Imo, MDZS is a masterpiece. I can't stop thinking about it months after reading it. I love everything about it. So I think I had too much expectation, especially after seeing all the hype the series get. Don't get me wrong, the drama is good (and the acting is on point). But I'm not loving it as much as I wanted to.
The series absolutely deserves what they have now and more, if you don’t like it just don’t like, but the…
How giving my opinion on a series is disrespecting fans? Don't make me laugh. Fans aren't producers nor actors involved in the series making so I don't care about their feelings.
What a mess. Don't even know how this series can have such a high ranking when one main lead couple arc story couldn't be completed, and secondary characters were useless at the end. We all know it supposedly due to Covid but shouldn't we judge the final product? If we remove FighterTutor hot scenes, does the series deserve 8.4?
The first main role is Tutor, but why does Zon leading the story and get more scenes at the same time?! I fail…
Tutor isn't the main lead. They had the great idea (*sarcasm) to mash up 2 stories in one: SaifahZon has their own novel, and so does FighterTutor. They kept the plot in which Zon is narrating his weird story (he discovers he's in his sister's novel) but they had FighterTutor arc story. So SaifahZon and FighterTutor are the main lead couples.
Lol well Duen has been like this since the beginning. I think it's because he's innocent when it comes to romance…
Exactly. I couldn't have said it better. They're too used to romance with quick development and skinship such as TTTS and TWM (which I love, no shade) and forgot about more realistic depiction of a relationship. I love when writers stay true to the characters' personalities to further the storyline instead of following the usual path taken by too many BL series. Duen has been depicted as a shy, innocent and conventional guy. Imagine if just at episode 5 he was kissing and sleeping with Bohn because fans were expecting it! Nah, I'll continue to prefer consistent writing and good character development.
Lol well Duen has been like this since the beginning. I think it's because he's innocent when it comes to romance…
Don't think in terms of episodes. We're in episode 11 but in the series timeline BohnDuen have been together not even a month. Do you expect someone to change in such a short time? Someone with Duen personality? Not everyone can kiss and do skinship at this early stage in a relationship. Not when it's their first relationship.
First time I see so much dislike for the main couple. As for me, I'm loving BohnDuen and I'm tired of people complaining about them. Yes, Bohn is hot-headed and too jealous, yes Duen is acting like a shy virgin but so what? These kind of people do exist in real life. Who wants to watch a series with flawless characters? What's wrong with them taking it slow to know each other? They've been together for 1 month. With this in mind, Duen being shy and not wanting to kiss Bohn isn't weird or unrealistic. Also, isn't it double standard to expect Duen to quickly accept Bohn's advances? If Duen were a woman, would people complain this much? While BohnDuen act childish and cute, I love their story because: - Bohn has finally met someone that stand up to him. He's a brat who usual gets what he wants but this time he has to learn to be patient and understanding of Duen. - Duen is super cute and likes to please people but he's no pushover. He's assertive and pragmatic. His "let's wait a year before talking about moving together" was great! *looking pointedly at Tine* - despite having opposite personalities, we're seeing them getting to know each other and trying to find a middle ground in their relationship - they wisely discussed the infamous top/bottom topic that unfortunately rarely comes up in other BL (and when it does come up, it's for laughs) - the fact I'm not even bother by the lack of skinship really proves how well these characters are written. They're cute together, I can see they've feelings for each other and they make me laugh. It's enough for me.
I can uderstand fans preferring a pairing over another one but I don't get the BohnDuen bashing that's been going on lately. It's like it's in fashion to overly criticize them and overly praise KingRam. To the point some people even wonder why BohnDuen are the main couple! Come on. While I like KingRam, their storyline isn't better than BohnDuen's imho. Each pairing has a good story with interesting characters, and that's the strenght of My Engineer.
