the thing is he yan is written like this, we'll get to see the serious side on the later parts. she's a general, yes, but not all generals have to be upright and serious all the time. in episode 1, they have already been showing he yan's gentle and compassionate side. she's a multidimensional character. it is also implied that she is not a character driven by revenge but more so on justice to take back what's hers. in the beginning, she's just a trainee and basically still recovering her strength. she's once again starting from scratch, hiding her identity and should not be carelessly powerful to raise suspicions.

the first day was successful and chaotic 🤣 but is now picking up new viewers. for some reason, contrary here in mdl, comments i see in chinese platforms like how fast-paced this one is and that the cross-dressing is effective. the drama rise up from 8 at 5.4% (first day) to 3 at 10.1% (second day) from cloud fusion data - aggregate ranking of all dramas from all platforms.

book fans, there are plot changes in the beginning and they don't want that but there are also book fans that are not bothered. most are new accounts tho so it's kinda questionable if they are really book fans or just targeting the drama, it's common in c-ent industry. anw, don't let this spoil you, the drama still got a high rating since its release.

in episode 1, by the end when he yan is practicing swords in white robe, did you noticed that she's mimicking the movements ding yi used on her when they were fighting at the cliff? ✨

also add that during historical times, wherein misogyny is evident, no one would ever think that a woman will voluntarily enter a military camp and be a soldier. he yan can only be considered a "pretty boy" as her fellow soldiers said.

she's different on the battlefield and her enemies, we're not there yet. idk what type of general you are expecting but he yan is like this, she's compassionate and shrewd, ruthless when necessary (especially when it comes to her people), justice over vengeance type of general. he yan is not a bloodthirsty general but is capable of being cold, decisive and even deadly. you may notice this in the preview of ep 9, how she can easily switch faces.
