I love Seo Ji Hoon, he's my bias. But I'm really struggling to stay interested in this drama. Especially because…
You've pretty much stated my feelings. I don't like when SML esp those who have a long history with FL get possessive. Just because he has known her longer doesn't mean she needs to fall for him/listen to him. FL already said she doesn't feel the same way, and made her feelings clear. I feel like they are making Do Gyum into a classic clingy second male lead, and that makes me sad. I still adore his character, and hope he gets his own happiness.
Not a fan of the trope of women with little education or money, but I think I'll watch for Nana.
Hope you started this! If you are a fan of Nana, this is a must watch. Please watch at least the first 4 since I also struggled a bit with the first two.
She doesn't have an elite education, but is capable and has a load of street smarts, huge heart, and strong sense of justice. She isn't well off, and she is willing to get down and dirty for money. She has her moments of doubt, but ultimately, she is a confident person who is unashamed of herself.
Hope more people would watch this! The first two episodes were a bit of a struggle for me too, but it's one of my favorites airing atm. I don't love some of the weird camera angles, but I think the production is trying out new things. There are some people saying it feels like a youth drama, and I agree. It uses bright colors, has friendships and cute romance with a big focus on dreams/finding your way in life. The politics are just enough that even if you don't like politics, it is a fun watch.
I love the main characters, and the progression of their relationship so far. Nana has settled into her character well, and is doing great. I love her righteous, shameless, and straightforward personality. Park Sung Hoon is an adorable, detached beta(?) male who supports and encourages Sera without personally solving problems for her. He has his set ways and boundaries, but allows Sera in (guess she also forces her way in too lol).
Also, I love the epilogues. I look forward to them every week.

If that was not your intent, then I misunderstood your comment. I apologize for that. I agree that plagiarism has legal definitions and is not always an easy thing to prove. Huge companies blatantly steal from small artists all the time, and this is where my anger/biased opinion comes from (not just this drama instance but in general).
The fact is the production did use SKKS to promote because it is well known enough for them to know it would generate interest. If you did not know about it, fine. Not everyone knows about all the popular dramas in every country.
Anyways, this post started because I am a fan of SKKS. Was excited for a remake and then find out it is false. Wanted to express my disappointment, and was quick to call it outright plagiarized. I edited my original comment to remove it.
Hope the drama stays fun to watch for you. I will be more careful with my wording in the future.

Just because something is not a masterpiece, doesn't mean it is okay to copy it. There can be stuff inspired by many things, which is why details are important.
There have been instances where shows are copies, but no official rights are purchased (which is wrong). Like I said before, the more money/lawyers you have, easier to find the loopholes. Technically not buying rights is cheaper than buying rights. Why bother going through process of buying rights, if they can find ways to avoid it?
Biggest issues for me. Do not use SKKS to market your drama as if it is an official remake. That is cheating the viewers and fans.

I edited to remove plagiarized since there are no official statements. The strong word usage was out of huge disappointment since I was excited about a purported remake.
However, I still stand by the point that you aren't a remake unless you have rights to the original material (manhwa/drama).

If this is the issue, I will edit my original post. My main issue was this is being touted as an official remake of SKKS using the same characters. The production also promoted using SKKS initially. I do not want to give views to the show, but have watched the preview clips.
Plagiarism issues usually get swept under the rug and ignored. This is something I hope doesn't happen.
Finally finally finished this one! It was draggy at one point, and I almost bailed. I am so glad I didn't. Not perfect, but looking back, it was overall an enjoyable one.
I wish we had spent more time in the present time since I adored the younger troublemakers lol It is so hard to pick a favorite character. Off to look up discussions and wallow in drama withdrawal.

Butterly Lovers has the cross dressing + romance trope which inspired lots of other dramas (including SKKS). I looked up BL after the first comment that mentioned it. The big and important difference here are the characters in this drama are exactly like the ones from SKKS which is the issue. Remakes don't always follow storylines exactly, but they still pay to be able to use the characters. I was able to find a post that compares each character. Will be back to edit with the comparisons. (Since original commenter I was replying to is not interested in this, will not add. Fans can watch both and make their own conclusions.)
The issue is plagiarism cases are not always resolved properly as people tend to turn a blind eye. This really hurts creatives because they are not being paid for their work, while other people will profit off of it.
You are free to enjoy the drama, and like you, I also hope the rights issue is resolved by the companies.
Enjoying this one. Lots of action. The story details and way plot progresses at times feels forced or lacking, but I am used to it from watching LOCH 17 right before.
I especially adored the child actor for Wuji and get excited when he appears in flashbacks. Yang Xiao is my favorite male character. I appreciate the variety of female characters, but don't have a clear favorite. As of now, Xiao Zhao intrigues me most. She seems very skilled and resourceful, but nothing is truly known about her.

If they did pay for the rights, why did production company essentially deny and say this is their original story. Also, when official remakes are done, they tend to promote that. There was a point in time when they were using SKKS to promote, but stopped.
Overall, this doesn't mean anything to me. Huge companies do shady shit all the time all over the world. They have money and lawyers which also means they have the means to know loopholes, how to avoid these situations and/or to silence/pay off people too.
If news comes out that they did in fact buy the rights the proper way, then I will definitely come back and say that. I just am very wary of plagiarizing/copying since it is done often and many times people don't know.
Kdrama Sungkyunkwan Scandal is a plagiarized version of the Cdrama The Butterfly Lovers- A Classic Chinese folk…
I don't think this was a case of plagiarism, but will look more into it. Thanks for the info. There are plenty of historical dramas with the cross dressing+ romance. This doesn't change the fact that this drama used to promote using SKKS but has since stopped because they never bought the rights to drama or manhwa. Also, took a peek at it, and it feels like a copy esp with characterizations. Hopefully the story isn't an exact copy, but would've been best if they paid for the rights properly. Also, like I said, this is a deal breaker for some and for others it isn't. To each his own.
-edit- based on current info, no official rights were bought for both drama and manhwa. Removed the statement outright calling this plagiarized as there are no official confirmations. Watched the preview and characters are just like SKKS. Drama was marketed intially using SKKS, but those have been stopped which means false marketing/advertising.
-original- This one looked interesting so I looked up more info. The production didn't buy the official rights to make a remake. Wish they could've paid for the rights then I would've definitely tried it out. Guess I won't be starting this one :/ People are free to watch whatever, but I know this can be a deal breaker for some people.
Many of these are *not* Netflix Originals though. E.g. The Untamed, it is on Netflix, but it's not "Netflix Original"…
I think most people don't know that Netflix Originals doesn't necessarily mean it was produced by Netflix. They have exclusive streaming rights for a lot of their shows, which allows them to use the phrase Netflix Originals, but they don't actually contribute to the creative aspect of it.
Also, I agree that Netflix subtitles are not very good / don't bother with subtleties. I always recommend watching on Viki over Netflix if it is available. However, Netflix great feature is automatic skip intro/skip recap.
