I have come close to dropping this, I cannot watch the character of Liu Ran and have to skip all of her scenes.…
I totally understand, hence my little rant π This is quite a blip on the storytelling and I sincerely hope not to encounter such characters in the future. Wishful thinking on my part though... π¬
Thanks for this fascinating insight and compilation of the survey, Kate. Kudos to Tine as well for being a wonderful editor. I may never fully comprehend the thought process but I totally respect hate-watchers for being able to hate-watch π
This drama takes place during Wu Zhao dynasty (690-705) when Wu Tzetian reigned as emperor in her own right and…
Yes, most C-historicals focus on the later time periods. Out of the ones set during the earlier eras that I've watched, you could try Qin Dynasty Epic, Three Kingdoms, and Red Cliff. They're quite compelling and provides a fascinating insight to the olden days of Imperial unification.

Good one, sis. There's indeed much going on behind Wu Zetian's reign particularly at the tail-end of her shortlived dynasty. That actually should've made for a rather compelling series in and of itself π€
Initially I wanted to ask you to co-write with me for this, since we had collaborated together for The Long Ballad…
Yes, I was a little caught up with real life matters so it's ok, we can collaborate again next year. I thought you did a pretty good with the article π
There's a rich source of material when it comes to historicals but the approach you took is a great way for introducing the drama and genre to viewers. Tang Dynasty and the interregnum with China's only ruling Empress in this story are my favourites. It's also a time when Luoyang and Chang'an flourished. But you're right, waiting about it would take up a lot of space lol.
Thank you for sharing your perspectives on Luoyang, I'm currently watching it as well π
I think despite some technical and script issues, it's one of the better C-historical and wuxia (some aspects of it) drama this year, which overall has been pretty quiet in terms of quality wuxia productions. It's also one of the few investigation-themed period costume dramas for this year as well.
I'm also glad you've finally discovered Huang Xuan. He's one of the top actors in China today, although he's not as popular as Yi Bo.
My fav genre and now there's even an editorial on it. Thank you for this, Cho Na. Very comprehensive guide and compilation indeed π₯° By the way, Merry Christmas to you! πβ
Nonetheless, some suspension of disbelief is required where accuracy in the application of the laws of physics…
Thanks for your kind words as always, Kate π€ Yes, I'm usually quite forgiving of the pseudoscience although I tend to switch off parts of my logic thinking lol
Agree on the CGI tiger as well. It does look fake, although much better compared to the ones in sageuk this year π
I don't always like open endings but this one is done well. Somehow to me open endings make more sense in sci-fi than other genres. In any case, I'm just happy to see the leads again and hope they'll have more projects coming up soon βΊοΈ
I agree with your points whether pros or cons. However, as underwhelming as the ending was regarding the killer's…
Thank you for reading my review and your feedback βΊοΈ Yes, I absolutely agree and I understand the approach taken in the storytelling. It makes perfect sense indeed the points that you highlighted. All the loose ends are tied up and everyone gets their closures.
From an entertainment perspective though, I wanted more out of the story, hence I felt underwhelmed π€·π»ββοΈ
As much as I want to lap up all that praise, there's a quick confession for me to make! Even tho I had discovered…
Aww, thank you so much for your very kind words π₯° I'm glad we all got to appreciate what a wonderful actor and person LJH is. Hopefully he'll get involved in more projects for our viewing pleasure indeed βΊοΈ

I agree with your thoughts in the marked comment too. That's a truly fascinating concept that was well handled by the writer.
I absolutely agree, I don't really like time skips, in general especially for the ending.
