Most people like these silly, frivolous romances and rate good dramas poorly because the story doesn't have kisses, hugs, and all that blablabla etc etc

Exactly. In 1969, things were completely different. If homophobia still exists today, imagine back then... The uncontrolled pressure of society... There would be no escape from a wife whose family was involved in the military. Not to mention that for her, it was humiliating, which unfortunately forces him to stay by her side (which would be different today). The story involves many layers, transcending the notion of just a happy ending.

I confess it's hard to watch Chinese dramas because of the dubbing they do over the actors' lines. But wow! This drama is simply perfect! I'm putting my annoyance aside, because this C-drama is wonderful! hahahah
