The lesson I learned from My Stubborn is that MFlow lucked out massively when they signed Boat and Oat. They're the only reason to watch anything coming out of that production company. The writing, the other actors, the direction, the camerawork, the editing...none of those are worth watching for.

I agree, it was awful writing. There's no reason why a smart, clever, educated person like Phatsa grew to adulthood without knowing about A/B/O when it's something that affects many people massively and can even be tested for easily in any hospital. Even his friends are tested and know their secondary gender, but somehow this never came up in conversation? It just doesn't make sense. Like you said, in such a world all teens would go through a standard test to show if they are pure humans (no differentiation) or alphas, betas or omegas. It's not like the latter are a small, close knit group living in seclusion from the rest of the world, which would be the only plausible reason for Phatsa being clueless. They're obviously everywhere.

And I agree, the exposition was incredibly clunky, like it was written by a middle-schooler. It could have been done so much better.

I admit that maybe my expectations on MFlow were too high. Boat and Oat deserve better.

Boat and Oat were the only redeeming factors of My Stubborn and the only reason I'm watching this.

I guess they just ran MTL for the subs because they are so bad it's even hard to make sense of them. It really drags it down. That's not what I pay an iQiyi subscription for.

I get what you mean, but the novel is several years old and came out long before they filmed RL... It just happens to play right into our fantasies about what might happen behind the scenes on a BL set

THIS!!! Saying that strong male friendship is "queerbaiting" when it never pretended to be queer is just perpetuating toxic patriarchal masculinity. We need MORE media depicting strong, close male friendship. That does not in any way stand in opposition to gay media, if it's not a case of a censored adaptation of a same-sex romance.

Even though Gaga calls this a BL in the synopsis on their site, this has not been marketed or publicised as such in Japan. It's an LGBTQ drama, not a BL. Depending on your preferences, this is not necessarily a bad thing, but if you are looking for a cute Japanese BL, look elsewhere or adjust your expectations.

Yeah, you may have a point. This is basically prostitution, and there's often a very blurred line between prostitution and coerced sex, since many sex workers probably wouldn't resort to it if they had any other choice. And romanticising either is very icky.
I think Thai BL was worse in the early days, on the whole, but there seems to be a resurgence of the toxic tropes recently.

There's plenty of wholesome BL with no grape or even a trace of dubcon. And judging from the trailer it's not even grape but a transactional thing... But yeah, it's probably not super wholesome. And I guess by now we have to accept that Longlee likes these roles, or his management does. And a subset of the BL fandom does as well, or they wouldn't continue making this kind of BL.
