I guess your right since the time when they were apart, he realized how she genuinely tried her best just so that she could be deemed “worthy enough” for him. He thoroughly realized his feelings and all her nice qualities. If they got together immediately then that would mean that he dated her out of pity rather than love. Jingjing had strong feelings for him since middle school but at this time was when he was beginning to have feelings for her so his feelings weren’t strong enough yet compared to hers. It’s just that the scene where he rejected her the 2nd time hurt since he rejected her before due to her not trying hard enough.
