Because it's not the full story. I started this novel with basically knowing only what you know. I didn't understand the popularity either. I decided to read it and I was determined to hate Mo Ran and I did. I literally hated the character so much. Then because of the current timeline, I was divided because I liked how pure and beautiful his love for his Shizun was but also, disliked him since he did do all that in his past life and I didn't know how to reconcile the two feelings. However, the last quarter of the novel when some major plot points are revealed, I just wanted to hug and comfort him. There is a very, very, very good reason for everything that happened and it literally brings everything full circle. And no, I am not excusing anything. I could spoil it for you but I think it's necessary not to because you just won't feel the same emotions as when you read it in the novel but I do ask you not to form opinions about the characters until you know everything.
