As someone who read the novel, I think the problem is what comes next. Pedophilia and corruption aren't things the communist party likes to admit exist. I honestly don't know how it was approved in the first place or why Youku didn't release all the episodes at once, they knew this was highly risky.

Well, personally I wish the first episode had more hints because I almost dropped this... I'm sure a lot of viewers DID drop it after episode one and it's a shame.
Actually because it is a drama and not a POV narrative piece like a novel, they could have easily found ways to let us know that Yoh gets things wrong sooner. A look, or maybe a scene without Yoh or some kind of flashback as the last scene of the first episode showing us what REALLY happened. Yeah, I would have appreciated a twist at the end of episode one like they did with Usokon.
The viewers are so divided here: people who think it's toxic and the ones who don't. I think both camps are right and wrong at the same time. It's becoming clear that the romance isn't toxic but it's also clear that the production initially wanted us to think that it is. So, my dear fellow viewers, there is really no need to fight. Just love or hate the drama but play nice.
I watched it back in March and knew it will probably get cancelled. I just read the novel after and it's even better, so no disappointment there. I only feel sorry for the great team of actors and people behind the camera, because they worked so hard and it's for nothing. Plus the Chinese people with no democracy and all that censorship.
Can they just sell the broadcast right to netflix?
To do that they also need permission from the Chinese government. I guess it depends on who they bribe with red envelopes... Maybe some day they will get permission.
