My head is aching reading all the possible theories in the comments here. I can't remember the last time when a drama brought me this edge on the seat. I am actually loving the fact this is actually an original script and the novel gets updated consecutively with the drama.
SML is the most boring one note character in the show. Meanie bully who fancies himself a bit more cunning that…
I admit that people have preferences. But to call SML "who fancies himself a bit more cunning than he actually is" is ludicrous. He is the smartest character in the entire show. He figured out YWS is actually not YWS. He knows something's up with SGQ and is always one step ahead of her. He figured out that YWS made that cold poison for the first trial. Despite knowing all these, he does not bulldoze to put blame on others. He is patient and waits until he has evidence to accuse someone unlike GZY (which I hate to point out coz I love GZY). Also he is not a one dimensional cold character. He knows when to speak what to speak and he actually cares for his brother GYZ. Every character has their own motive and is acting according to them.
Every character in the drama is interesting and mysterious. I am on the edge of the seat watching every episode so far. Also i am loving the sismance of YWS and SGQ. Like that is so rare in dramas. We'll either have a wallflower bestie of Fl or they bring down each other. But here they are rivals who may not essentially care for each other but are helping other for mutual interest. So I hope their bond prevails until the end. As much as I agree that Yu ShuXin should get more screentime, right now i like that her character is mysterious. We know nothing about her except that she had a sister and she may not be a chi. I am so curious about her origin. The main leads' romance is painfully slowburn but that is what making me love it more. It perfectly inclines with their characters. GZY wears his heart on his sleeve, no wonder YWS chose him as her target. But she as an assasin thinks love has no place in her life. So obviously it will take lot of time for her to warm to him which GZY is certainly succeding in given his sweet and caring nature. Their story pace makes perfect sense. Meanwhile I am thoroughly enjoying second leads story flow. They keep us guessing. They make us wonder if any word coming out of their mouth is genuine. Every word that GSJ says sounds like a foreshadowing to me. He talks as if he already knows that SGQ is an assasin but always gives her an inch. Like the way he subtly puts her in her place each time but also goes out of his way to do things for her. Their equation is so complex i am loving it. Coming to Ji Fan and Zishang, I love a good unrequited love from a female character's pov. I can relate to it and have a good cry. Double bonus when female character later ignores them and the male realizes their importance and grovels. I am so looking forward to them. So there is now way anyone can feel bored watching this drama. The story is to the point without fillers and there's enough mystery to keep us on the edge of our seats. While writing out this whole essay, i realized that I am a huge fan of a good mystery/thriller with love story as plot but not the opposite. Because the characters are tastefully done and the angst hits differently...
Looks like the guards at Gong Residence are more dedicated to light the white lanterns than actually doing their job. No wonder people are dying left and right 😒
