I fell in love with the drama after watching the first episode...it had that genre-bending feeling. 2nd, 3rd episode…
Woww I absolutely love the way you summed it all up, I completely agree with you. I had the same reaction watching the end. I get that Eul Tae was crazy for the supernatural power, because he was physically weak and therefore was sidelined by his father, who wanted a strong heir. Because of Lee Joon's acting and how everyone hyped it, the writer's suggesting that he was a victim too in this twisted tale, I was secretly wishing that they would show more of his struggle, how he came to be his twisted self, but because they didn't, sometimes his eccentricities seemed theatrical to me, empty and the character lost its intrigue, in the end he was just like usual villains hungry for power. When I found out that there was no more to his story than what was shown before about his brother's death and him getting intrigued by BulgaSU's powers, it made me yawn. They better would've just made him a psycho, with no motive. All he did was wishful thinking, so it seemed foolish to go through such lengths to try to achieve that, when they drew him up as this ruthless sly villain, when in actuality he was on his way to screw his own life...they didn't fully explain his obsession with Hwal, he literally had met him once, and seen his power once, how could he believe that he would be on his side, and give up BulgaSU for whom he killed everyone, ET and Hwal didn't even talk on the night they changed. Also, they didn't even explain the night of the massacre 600 years ago. So many misses and a few great moments, overall.
Wait who tf is apologizing and for what...lmao didnt hwal technically save her from village people...and the audactiy…
I think Eul Tae suffered a lot by getting involved with Hwal, and he was treated badly by his father, which was sad tbh, by the father who by the way annoyed the hell out of me, cuz all his incarnations fucked up Hwal's/his kids life some way or the other, but still Eul Tae was beyond redemption imo cuz he was extremely selfish and evil, and it's not like he actually cared for Hwal, he stopped him from becoming a human which was what Hwal longed for. Ik ik BulgaHwal asked him to turn him back at the 600 yr mark which I didn't quite get why, but still Hwal's life was the most tragic
In the end, it's always the guy who gets blamed in kdramalandππππ . Doesn't matter if he's the victim…
Umm I don't think it's righ to make an assumption like that about male characters in kdramaland, but yes, poor Hwal suffered the longest, along with Eul Tae (who, honestly, brought the suffering on himself, so I can't say I'm sad for him), Hwal was still made to apologize, and Sang un never got to know the whole story, so he felt guilty in her eyes, even tho she might've thought otherwise if only she got her memories back
The only reason I couldn't give this drama more than a 7.5 is because the story was so slow, but still frustratingly…
Same,I don't know what to feel about the show as whole, honestly, I find so much stuff that's just weird and things badly executed, then I re-watch some stuff I absolutely loved.
Sangun did Hwal dirty wait everyone did him dirty besides eultae i hate it how they made Hwal look like the bad…
Also, the smiling Hwal they showed in the flashback, that wasn't an evil smile, it was more like "babe I saved you, let's go home" lol I couldn't stop laughing when he did that. I wish they showed he was actually evil, but he was victim all along, then all that hate BulgaSU felt would've been justified. BulgaSU was obsessed with the kids, and he had left them alive, the soldiers got what they deserved. Also, BulgaSU's behaviour towards BulgaHwal doesn't match with Sang Un's, she would not have left him like that to begin with, and she would've stopped him before it got extreme ig. BulgaSU was weird honestly, so I didn't feel their love story.
Sangun did Hwal dirty wait everyone did him dirty besides eultae i hate it how they made Hwal look like the bad…
Also, I couldn't believe that that's his so called bad karma, literally everyone was chill there beheading an innocent person, cutting her body and burying her - who could not speak to defend herself (didn't try to because well Siho), her so called family didn't open their mouths, when they had seen the real culprit & witnessed the crime, so what do they expect from him to do, nothing like her? I actually kinda found it sweet that he came to her rescue even tho she had ditched him, tho he took it to extreme.
Sangun did Hwal dirty wait everyone did him dirty besides eultae i hate it how they made Hwal look like the bad…
Yep, I couldn't agree with you more. I was confused about what I actually felt about the ending - was it a tragedy cuz they didn't survive, the reincarnated selves were different peeps tbh, but then they met again, Hwal turned human as he wished so is it a happy ending?! - the I saw his hairstyle, which confirmed that it was a tragic end indeed. Both of their hairstyles tbh, Sang un had Ajhumma clothes in the past, now she got weird Ajhumma hair
There are two major things that I feel stopped this drama from becoming a blockbuster:1. Under-utilisation of…
One thing Bulgasal did get spot on was use of metaphors and imagery to add more meaning to the scenes. A lot of the imagery and things that were set were tied to the bigger picture, and elevated the fractured story telling, for that the writers really blew my mind, such small details, could be overlooked, but if paid attention, they have deep meanings behind them, like the dandelion, the red thread, the red flowers, the light that shined on the bg when Hwal and Sang un come on screen, the painting etc etc
Given the budget, they could've done better, as the ratings were on a free fall, must have been a huge loss to producers. Nevertheless, for all such intricacies in the scenes and the concept overall, I will look forward to their next project, and the next roles the actors take up. I wouldn't call this a failure, as many have, they will deliver an even better show next time, I'm sure.
I believe that he not only gave his soul to him, but his family followed it, Detective Kwon was his father, Shi…
I loved reading both your comments on this thread. I always wondered about the red thread, it's like the red string of life that connects people, he take sit out of her hair, just when he is talking about the messed up relations among them. I agree with you on the reason why he hates Hwal, and also about the potential family thing. However, I'm happy with the end he got, he was a merciless power hungry weakling imo lol
Really, it was a joke, the whole series... and it is just because of the ending, that the series became a joke.
Couldn't believe that it was all because of a misunderstanding, and ET was a fool to think he could randomly gain something, instead ending up in eternal agony himself. All the Bulga Couple needed was some couple therapy lol
There are two major things that I feel stopped this drama from becoming a blockbuster: 1. Under-utilisation of the acting potential and skills the main actors have 2. Bad scenario writing by the writers. I don't watch fantasy dramas, but I was so excited to watch this after the trailers. I absolutely loved the performances by the main cast (maybe not the actor playing Do hyun). Unlike many people who trash the female lead's acting, I think she had the most work to do, she was acting out character in different timelines, that dealt with the crisis differently, and to handle all of that - to embody all those emotions, I think she did a commendable job. The writers hats off developed a very interesting concept with so many complex elements like monsters, revenge, family drama, reincarnation etc etc etc but they completely under-developed many important things - tbh I loved the performance of the actor playing Eul Tae, but I would've loved to see more of his struggles in 1000 years past - when the finale showed that he was just another power hungry villain, it suddenly lost the intrigue for me. The performance really set it up as a complex character, sometimes made me feel sympathetic toward him, but we did not get to explore the different layers of his internal struggle, we just see one day of his 1000 year life - the actions of which will impact the entire narrative, they should've shown more. They could've done so much with the reincarnations of Kwon Nara's characters. Also, could've made Hwal's present self more interesting by not limiting him to a vampire that lives in a closet all his life...there was so much scope than making him a Bulgasal that depends on old Ajhussi private detectives. He could've more pretend lives over the time Min Sang un reincarnated. Also, they should've focussed more on developing the romance in the present, since they didn't a lot of people felt like it was forced, even tho the actors' chemistry was great in my opinion. Their arc was beautiful, but if he only remembers all of 1000 years in a glimpse in the last episode, how do you justify the depth of the connection to the audience. It was a 16 episode drama, I feel like they should've uncovered all the backstory by ep 11, got revenge and ended the curse by ep 14, and showed their new life story post reincarnation in ep 15-16. I still didn't get a proper explanation to 600 years past; did explain ET's obsession enough to make it seem sensible altho he was made up to be a sly villain. also, they completely wasted Si Ho's superpowers - she just did incomplete readings, and asked for promises that literally screwed up the plot. The actress is so phenomenal, but they wasted her talent. hope to see her in a new show, where they do her talent justice. They should've made use of Min Sang un's flashbacks when she suddenly uses her fighting skills, I would've loved seeing such action scenes. Tons of weird moments - 1. how did the police waiting outside the tent not hear any sounds of Eul Tae killing the shaman lady, and attacking everyone else - no one can ignore such cannibalism lol 2. ep 16, why did Do Hyun keep on walking, after SU fell down from her injury, he didn't even look back to check on his sisters, so much for family 3. how did Hwal reincarnate in the present???!!!! 4. How did he get out of the well that's supposed to keep ET locked forever? 5. How did SU find her phone to call Si Ho?? 6. In the scene from 100 years ago, why did Si Ho and Do Hyun not utter once about the man they saw killing the king's son when they were abut to behead their life saver????? 7. why did Bulgalady and BulgaHwal not speak even once, did they not know human language back then? Shouldn't people who are able to utter flowery curses know back language? Finally, did Hwal drive his son back in his car when he could only see with one eye?!!?!?! there's more, but my fingers are dead from typing
BTW, I am confused with something, it is kind of weird they professed their love for each other on ep 15 and that…
Thank you for bringing this up, I was SO confused by this, like one second I hear him saying he can't ever let go of her, then he's like please turn be back to a human...what I concluded was he does not want her to die (the possible end because killing ET will kill her - Bulga Twin theory), so he goes to fight ET even tho he might die, and if he survives, he wishes to turn human because that won't kill her, liek she will survive unlike the alternative...BUT WHY would you want to put someone you just "confessed" to, to suffer ETERNAL AGONY?!! I cannot believe he is in love with her, tbh even tho I did ship them
IN THE STARTING , SANGHWAL reallly made me scream KISS KISS KISS at them but what did they end up doing, you guessed…
Don't fret, if SangHwal didn't understand the assignment, Eul Tae did, thanks to him the tension reached to 100 in the fight scene or it wasn't a fight scene oops
But on a serious note, I was pleasantly surprised to hear Hwal finally accepting that, but then when he asked her for the favour of turning him into a human again, I did not know how to react ig it's fair only
True, but then you also said "Hwal confirmed" meaning we never got to see Dan Sol's side of the story; everything…
Yep that's the purpose - to have a reason for seeking revenge lol and also to make him look further into the past - 1000 years ago - it's obvious that the family's death is necessary to make the three/two Bulgasals' fates to get intertwined again - and show effect of a curse basically...writers like to mess with our emotions
I love War of Hearts!!One of the awesome OSTs is on Apple Music now btw- Leave by 4MEN
I'll look out for that one now...Well, this just means there are few other songs still not released, I'm disappointed honestly... already I felt like they weren't doing enough promotions and now the songs!!! π’
I love War of Hearts!!One of the awesome OSTs is on Apple Music now btw- Leave by 4MEN
Wait, I haven't noticed that one yet, I heard one I think isn't released yet which came in the bg when DH dressed Sang UN's wound for the first time, and she went to change in her room.
True, but then you also said "Hwal confirmed" meaning we never got to see Dan Sol's side of the story; everything…
Yes, I agree with your point, that because of material connection and love, Dan Sol was more distraught, it was both a physical and emotional trauma for her.
Since, the writers had not dwelled on the romantic relationship between DH and Sol at all in the beginning, so I took a hint how this was gonna be, I feel like the writers want to focus on a loveline that doesn't usually appear in these kind of shows, where a character can have a deep emotional attachment to someone, yet find someone else who is a perfect companion to you/destined for you (keeping in mind the fantasy theme and 1000 year timeline) - this is actually normal and happens in real life all the time. But it is a bit weird for drama audience to accept...
they only focus on Si Ho's tragic maternal mom storyline, however she's not portrayed as a tragic romantic female lead - I feel like she wasn't pining for his love in the past life - Si Ho is actually is very strong female - she doesn't wait for any man - not in the past and not in the present - like she just needs a safe place and constancy which Hwal and her father never gave her . But she did trust him as family, we see that in the last moment, but I don't think she loved him.
what I find shockingly strange is that they never once showed DH looking for his family's reincarnation - like it's 600 years man - wouldn't you wanna see them even once - or did they all just reincarnate for the first time in this timeline and I just didn't understand lol Also, another weird bit was when Hwal asked Si Ho to look into her past life - wtf was he tryna do - look for the murderer? Or just him?! - but wouldn't the revelation of the past relation just weird out everyone - also even tho the sisters don't remember anything and they are literally different individuals after reincaration - Hwal remembers everything from 600 y.a. - isn't that a bit funny?!! The bottom line is I ship SangHwal cuz that's the ship writers are leaning towards lol Also, because Dan Sol's storyline was kinda like - I liked you enough to have your children but now it's a disaster and I'm truly unhappy, so I despise you and you make me uncomfortable. Nobody can feel love towards someone in this situation imo
So many misses and a few great moments, overall.
