If I’m understanding episode 18 right, the real Yuan Wuhuo died because those twin butterfly demons devoured him to take over his existence. After they came out of the cocoon, the human's identity was divided between the two of them. Li Jie got the physical strength but zero memories of being a demon, while the other Yuan Wuhuo kept the magic and his memory.

I think I know what is happening with Ji Ling’s memories of Lu Wu Yi and why he is having flashbacks. In the past, when they sat by the ocean and Ji Ling gave her flowers, she made him forget her. Because Ji Ling is the Dragon Deity’s past innocent self, the Deity gave those memories to Ji Ling when he created him so he could feel like a part of his old self was returned.
