That was Yan Dan's lucid dream. Knowing that Ying Yuan have feelings for her made forgetting about him worth it, since he would remember her and their love forever while she would not. IMO, it was her little revenge but at the same time something that showed her everything she's done for him wasn't in vain, because he loved her too.
And I think the thing that flowed into the hairpin was her memories of him.

From what I've read, the novel is a little bit of a mess. lol It seems the author wanted to convey a sort of message with her book but wasn't really able to . Then, she had to come out and explain a few plot points so that readers would understand her choices a little bit better.

I think episode 18 was one of the saddest episodes so far. It was really heartbreaking ngl. However, it's good to know that next week carefree, lively Yan Dan will come back. Plus, Ying Yuan will be able to break his heavenly shackles for a little while as Tang Zhou.
