We women have been enduring patriarchy for hundreds of years..and you men can't even handle a fictional story?…
Yep! It did. And I have already apologised for that.

I just watched a BTS on YouTube (provided by one of the commenters here...thank you for that!) and I think I have a slightly better understanding of what's going on here. I apologise for my earlier harsh remarks and for starting what some have referred to as a 'toxic' disagreement. One of the producers says 'Under the shell of a costume drama actually, the drama has a very modern emotional core'. I get that. I suppose my problem is that I watch these dramas expecting to see real historical content and forgetting that it's fictional and will normally have a very modern message built into it. I know that these dramas frequently serve to show women as strong and independent. My problem with this is that it is often at the cost of showing men as weak and corrupt. I have watched a great many of these drama series where that is all too often the case, and it sometimes frustrates me, again, forgetting that it is fictional after all. So I do apologise again for any offence I might have caused. It really was not my intention. I was frustrated and I expressed that frustration openly. That annoyed some of you. I won't apologise for that. You are responsible for your own reactions to my frustrations. I will only apologise for the fact that I may have come off as somewhat misogynistic at worst and perhaps chauvinistic at best. That was inappropriate.

And I apologise for the toxicity...I was merely expressing an opinion about my take on the drama. I think what you ladies take as 'toxicity' is simply my take on the drama that you don't agree with. And I apologise if you see disagreement as toxic. That was not my intention.

Don't let the door hit u on the way out. Actually, let it hit you, maybe it will give you some sense.
Listen, you don't have to like my opinion, but the fact that a comment section is provided here means I have the right to express one. Woke Feminazi psychopaths always believe that if one doesn't believe what they believe, then they should just shut up. I'm sorry, but I disagree. I was expressing an opinion. I have the right to do so. And you have the right to disagree with that opinion. But don't get stupid with personal attacks about what 'problems' I need to worry about. You don't know me and I don't know you (thank God!) So let's leave it at that.

If my 'bigger problem' is in dramas to watch, you have confirmed one thing for me. These dramas are made for women. That was what I always suspected. But there are also great Chinese dramas made for men. Three Kingdoms, Red Cliff (movie, not drama, but still great...), Qin Dynasty, etc...I love History. And I love dramas. That is not a problem for me. The idea that you seem to think that only women should be able to watch these dramas means you have your own problems to deal with.

I've tried my best to watch this...I really have! But the whole feminist bs 'women are strong, men are weak' nonsense is just too much for me to bear. I leave this to you women to enjoy. It isn't something a real man can take seriously. Thanks for the memories, though 😉😄

Title Cao Cao
I once saw a drama about the Cao family which I presume was fictionalised because it started with Cao Cao's great grandfather murdering the families of officials at the Palace. It, unlike this one, did have English subtitles. Does anyone know the name of this drama series?

I wouldn’t say it was heavy. The BL elements are far more prominent than the propaganda. As far as i remember…
It's all good 😊 When I wrote the original post, I had just finished watching an episode where it is explained that the game, when it was created by a Chinese person, was benign until it was corrupted by capitalism and the Americans. I found that to be rather heavy-handed propaganda, and said so. I just felt like sharing, that's all. It didn't change the way I feel about the series, however. One has to expect the potential for a level of propaganda to come from any mode of entertainment no matter what country it comes from. That's just life. I'm fine with that. For the record, having just finished episode 20, and watching from a different perspective after having read your point of view, it does seem a little bit like the two of these fellows do actually get a bit moonie-eyed with one another on occasion. I'd never noticed it before. Interesting 🤔

I'm sorry, but I don't see the romance. I am familiar with people who want to see that sort of thing subversively placed in every plotline of every series they watch, but I don't ascribe to that sort of thing. That's just me, though. I don't judge anyone who does it. We all have our own ways of enjoying the things we like. Nothing wrong with that.

The anti-American propaganda in this series is so heavy handed! But that's all right...I love this series so much! And now I understand how Russians and Chinese must feel after watching some American productions. It must be frustrating and annoying, since it happens far more often to them than it does to us. 😏 Incredible series so far nevertheless...I'm on episode 20 and going strong. 😊

I just watched the first 2 episodes, and I am definitely hooked! Am I correct in understanding that there was a romantic relationship between the two ML's in the original work upon which this series is based? I would have liked to have seen that. What a shame it was not incorporated into the series.

I'm watching Episode 14, and Xie Wei just said to Jiang Xue Ning 'I hope the Coming of Age ceremony won't become a disaster again'. What did he mean by 'again'? Was that a mistake or is he reincarnated as well? I'm confused...🤔

I think his conscience is troubling him for being so weak and pathetic and murdering the woman he "loved" instead…
I thought the Princess would have killed him after he betrayed her at court by not recognising XF/JL as his wife. But I agree with everyone here. Death would be too easy for him. He needs to live a long healthy miserable and unhappy life with all of the guilt and remorse that comes with that for his terrible actions.

The stepmom’s lover is so robotic and dramatic…what’s his deal? I hope he has some master revenge plan cooking.…
I'm a bit excited to see how that pans out as well. He's the Princess' stooge, and she needs the stepmother to help her get rid of XF/JL. But he's got to be wanting to see her pay for trying to burn him alive. And she's somewhat responsible for the original injury to his hand as well. She basically ruined his life. I can't see him just letting that go...even for the Princess' sake. I guess we'll see soon enough! 😊

It is a correct translation. And its certainly no more pretentious that Ode to Melancholy by Keats who also writes…
I'm with you there. There are some times when the messaging is so overbearing that I simply have to stop watching.

The song title isn't pretentious at all. The English translation is literal and is the translator's interpretation,…
Since I have already agreed with someone who wrote to me privately that I will no longer pursue the political aspect of this discussion, I will leave your propaganda laden nonsense aside, and deal with one thing only.

You say I 'claim' to be an historian. I have a Master's degree from NYU and PhD from the Université de Genève in European history. Not Chinese history. So I am willing to admit that I have things to learn. Which is why I asked the question. Many of you became defensive (and a tiny bit offensive) instead of simply answering the question. It's a trait the Chinese government takes on as well. Hence I do thinak many of you are shills of the government. Just my take. Otherwise why would you become so defensive? Only the government has a stake in defending itself so strongly. Anyway, I promised I wouldn't discuss politics, so I'm done here. ☺️
