Yes it's completely different from the novel except for the basic plotline... Here they made Ying Yuan the hero and Yu Mo the second ml but in the book it's Yu Mo who is the first ml .

When the drama first started to shoot it was scheduled for 80 episodes. Also when the policy was passed, where a drama can't be more than 40 episodes, it was rumoured that IS will be divided into two parts each part having 40 episodes.
