My memory might not be the best buut:1. The author was basically sending letters to the past and the boy was sending them to the future. So the post box is essentially a time machine.2. I think because he started writing letters to the past again he managed to change the past and create something like an alternate reality where neither Fandy Fan nor Leslie Cheung were dead at the end.Hope this helps!
