Based on what i saw in the movie and my read of the review (link appended below), I believe Ryuta died from overwork due to his doing two part-time jobs and not getting enough rest, causing his body to collapse. The injury you mentioned could also be one of the underlying issues since he didn't get enough rest to recuperate...

just started #1. As I watch 1-2, i read all your comments. I may be wrong, but from my read, this one seems complicated with hidden love rival/s, plot built on wicked family member/s causing breakup, lead/s not opening up to talk it out to clear the air, suffering in silence, not standing up for oneself, distrust... Since we don't know how many episodes of the 40-slowburner series such angst feeling will take before the silver lining, I'll wait till finale. Life is stressful enough, don't want to get angsty and unhappiness...

Bumped into an acquaintance at the cafe this afternoon while rewatching HL snippets on Facebook. When I asked her if she's caught HL, she said she "initially found it interesting but it got draggy mid-way". Hmmm... i guess one man's meat is another man's poison.
