It was ok, it started really well, but then after episode 24 it got boring, I had to skip after that. It would've…
oh you should watch more historical dramas from the Ming Dynasty. Have you watched 'Story of Yanxi Palace'? ML has about 108 concubines and FL only has 1 first love. Same goes with 'Royal Feast' starring Xu Kai and 'The Sword and the Brocade', where FL only has ML who has a bunch of concubines.
uhmmmm.... so no one is gonna talk about how he intruded her privacy by swapping her phone and reading her private posts aka her diary without her express permission?? Goodness if it were me i'd be furious! It's against the law and extremely offensive on top of it! Stop romanticizing such problematic and illegal behaviour!
great potential ruined by inconsistent character writing. FL's sudden change of heart gave me a whiplash. If she really hated that kind of life and didn't wanna be a concubine, why did she make romantic advances on ML in the first place despite knowing he already had an official wife, and then dump him without a proper reason? Is she playing with his feelings for her personal vendetta or what? Her motif is utterly ambiguous. As for ML, him being a dutiful husband easily changed overnight. He abandoned his wife (2FL) and fell for someone else (FL) just because of a slight mistake stemming from his wife's past trauma and insecurity. His commitment is so superficial (;一_一). Plus he watched as FL was beaten to near death without stopping it, just because she refused to be his concubine and refused to beg him for mercy....Another potential drama gone to waste!
wanted to watch but after a preview on ep31 i decided otherwise. Cheng Xiao's acting is so wooden here. She wasn't this bad in Falling into Your Smile >"<

you made the right decision lol. I nearly dropped the drama on ep22 too, but decided to give it another chance, so finally i dropped it at ep32. The writing is just so bad. I agree with the majority of your point but i gotta defend her a bit. I can understand FL's initial lie about being a concubine of 2ML because their relationship wasn't confirmed or certain at the time, and both of them schemed against each other. He was wearing 2FL's wrist supports (without knowing) and flaunted them in FL's face like a prized possession while saying those things, so i can chalk it up to warfare and jealousy.
But what i can't stand is when she stripped him off his right to choose how to live his life, forcing him to become crown prince despite knowing that he hates it. FL's so-called intelligence plummeted and doesn't seem to recover. And her pouting and sulking is just soooo painful to watch. Her being rescued constantly gave me secondhand embarrassment. The entire drama is about ML having to give up his aspiration while being reined in and locked in a cage by FL.
Jing Tian is absolutely capable of pulling off mature, independent, and intelligent roles, which have been showcased in 'Rattan' and 'City of Streamer'. But playing a petulant and ignorant damsel in distress who blames ML for his nonexistent fault goes against the empowering image she has strived to build. I truly hope she wouldn't take roles like this anymore.

Sadly yes but it's largely due to the writing. There are some cute swoon-worthy moments which i enjoyed a lot (especially Xu Kai's deep longing gaze), but then their sparks couldn't sustain after what FL did to impose her will on ML, subsequently resulting in the deaths of his nanny and comrades. On top of that all the blames are placed on ML when FL was never responsible or apologized him for her self-righteous decision.
writer-nym why did you have to turn FL into a damsel in distress over and over again to resolve conflicts with…
Although both leads are my favs i just can't carry on anymore. Chemistry is just lukewarm. ML got forced into doing something he loathes by FL, who is so self-righteous and constantly in need of rescuing despite being well-versed in kungfu. She insisted on opening a can of worm and our ML had to deal with the aftermath. Our smart leads got repeatedly ambushed by many one-dimensional rage-inducing cannon fodders whose brains are the size of a peanut but somehow can cause very serious damage to our leads who happened to be so unprepared. Very disappointing and inconsistent/conflicting character writing. I had such high hope for this..... *sigh*. What a waste of talents (¬_¬)
writer-nym why did you have to turn FL into a damsel in distress over and over again to resolve conflicts with ML??? she's a general for god's sake! what a copout.
Gu Yun Zheng is one of the most endearing MLs i've seen in the dramaland. Of all the dramas starring LYX, this is my fav. Every time he's on screen my heart would start to throb T^T. Great acting, albeit lacking in the kissing department. His character is tooo good to exist irl, but i'm living in the cdramaland so idrc, and I'll just indulge in this fiction without caring about other people's judgments. A solid 8/10 for me.
this series, from ss1 to ss2, can be summarised as: One of the 2 leads has some secret problem and fears that the other side would be worried or upset, so s/he would keep the secret hidden, thereby causing the other side to worry and misunderstand, resulting in the exact effect of their fear. Afterwards both would say sorry, swear they've learned their lessons, and promise they wouldn't lie and hide things from one another again.

Except they would. Without remorse.
Rinse and repeat x3000.
It's become their episodic routine :v.
