She's a lotus flower (of medicinal qualities) incarnated into spirit form and serves as a lowly immortal attendant. He's I think like a high god but has a secret identity in that he's half Asura clan, which is a terrible demon clan from thousands of years back. They end up going to mortal realm, she becomes a demon because of betrayal (I believe, don't know but that's how it seems to be panning out) and he gets reincarnated as a human demon hunter. As for their third life, not sure.

So my theory is, the emperor is shifty af and that Ying Yuan's mother was actually in love with the Asura clan leader, and not hypnotised like the emperor said. I think the emperor was in love with her and when he discovered she'd given birth to the Asura clans child, killer her and decided to keep Ying Yuan around as a pawn.
