Actually, concerning the nationalism and patriotism, it was also greatly emphasised in the book. A love and service to and for their country. The drama follows the book closely and being a soldier was one thing that helped Lu Chen find his purpose especially with his crappy family background.
And according to the new censorship rules, they have to make any portrayal of the police or military very realistic, so they have to do a good job so as to get through censorship.

It's quite sad at the beginning because it goes through their background and the reason they broke up in the first place, but it definitely will get better. You will enjoy their love story. And it also has a HEA.
