I'm beginning to think DS's mother is dyslexic, and despite DS and everyone else trying to teach her to read, she just can't.
DS is only about 40 right? Which means it was only 30 years ago that the mother went to live as a "slave" with the other family. That's the 1990s. It would have been hard to get any job when she couldn't read and she was a single mother.
By becoming a concubine, I think she expected a nice place to live, someone to love, and a payout at the end. And she didn't get the payout, and she got kicked out of the nice house because the oldest son lost it.
It still doesn't explain why she's so kind to animals and so cold to DS. Maybe she thought that by ignoring DS, the husband and the other sons would like her better and make sure she had a place to live and a payout.
I also want to know why DS's mother keeps giving her money away. Is it because she does not want DS to get it after she dies?
We have to take into account the generational Gap between the mother and the son. She didn't live during a time…
I agree with most of what you said.
However, "The way I see it, his mother went to become a concubine as to ensure that her son would get an inheritance from her second husband," I don't know. She made DS call her Aunt, instead of Mother. That implies that he's practically not related like the real sons are to the father, so DS wouldn't get an inheritance.
Dong Seok's father is not his mother's first husband. Maybe Dong Seok IS actually his step father's son and the step father did not want to acknowledge Dong Seok as his son. That could explain why Dong Seok's mother wanted Dong Seok to call her Aunt instead of mother.
Or Dong Seok's father is someone else completely and would have been a bastard, so no one in the family wanted to acknowledge him?
Maybe Dong Seok's mother was just raising Dong Seok for someone else?
Whatever the reason, it's going to be super messed up.
Dong Seok's mother is a piece of work. I wish he'd just tell everyone what she did to him. And she's still crapping…
NEW THEORY!

She treated stray cats better than how she treated her son. From the recollection of Dong Seok, imagine being…
The only twisted reason I can think of is that she needed someone to take care of her and a place to live, and the stepfather maybe didn't want her son as part of the bargain. But she could have explained it to him. She could have been kind in private. She wasn't.
Dong Seok's mother is a piece of work. I wish he'd just tell everyone what she did to him. And she's still crapping on him. All that delay to get to the boat. She knew that they were going to miss the boat. No wonder he has bad relationships with women.
many of us are grownups.. don't cry that easily... but that little princess made us cry... i really loved that…
OMG, that little girl is an amazing actress. Those were tough scenes to pull off as adults. I can't imagine how they directed that little girl to act so well. I cried so much during this episode.
MJ. She's definitely in a better place at work. And being kind to her ex in the bank line instead of calling him an asshole made him be nice to her and pay her back. In hindsight, I'm glad there were no romance between MJ and Gu. He's not right for her.
Gu. He needs serious help. MJ is a good friend, but she's nuts if she stays with him if he doesn't get his alcoholism under control. I couldn't quite figure out his ending. He keeps taking MJ's advice, and I finally figured out that he was kind to the gambler and the money Gu had stashed away was to pay off the gambler's debts? Maybe? I'm not sure that helps.
KJ. TH still doesn't stand up for her with his family. Pity is not love and even though TH technically hasn't done anything wrong, he's not right for her. I wanted her to end up with her boss, who gets her. Her "love" was the rose and it was beheaded and she picked up the head and saved it. That harkens back to her early comments about the beheaded lover.
CH. He started out as the most annoying character, and he was my favorite at the end. Kind. He got his Dad remarried so there would be someone to take care of the Dad. At first I thought CH bought the convenience store to run, but now I think he just worked there. His loan from his new MIL was for all those sweet potato ovens he didn't sell. I loved that he was always where he needed to be, and ended up taking a class as a funeral director. Perfect job for him.
I wanted a reunion between CH and MJ, but as someone else said, MJ was right not to tell CH that Gu was back. CH and Gu would have totally jump hugged and shut MJ out.
I see a lot of comments about not seeing a reunion of Gu and Chang-hee, but remember the scene when Gu was laying…
Although Gu always looked put out at CH trying to get friendly, the fact that Gu had no friends, I think he always appreciated CH deep down. Giving CH his Rolls just proved it. And CH's jump and hug on Gu still cracks me up. I don't think anything could top that, which is why we didn't gat a Gu/CH reunion hug.
Each time I thought I knew what the "athletic event" was, they faked me out. Soccer? Nah.

Plus, the Liberation Club is getting back together.
