ML is an ancient god who has been alive for as long as he can remember. He’s not just a usual god but an "Ancient god" pretty much like a fossil. He’s odd because he has been a very lonely person all this time around and even though he has seen everything. He has no experience about what he has seen. He is not aware of his emotions right away. He discovers them little by little after meeting Shen Li that he found attractive. His push and pull are literally him not knowing what happening to him when he comes to her. He has a responsibility which is attached to the survival of the 3 realms and forbid him to be emotional or having desire. This is going to make sense later just be a little patient. The wedding was already set up from the get-to-go before he knew Shen Li. She would be arranged to be married with any candidate in the list. It’s an essential alliance between the two realms which obviously do not like each other at all. In the firsts episodes already, They told the story a little about these 2 realms when Xinyun and Shen Li were in the mortal realm. Something like there were constant disputes between the Divine and the Immortal for a millions years w conflict between them before the two sides finally came to an agreement. They settled in two different parts of the heaven known as the Divine realm and the Immortal realm. The wedding is kinda supposed to serve as a lever to calm tensions and lack of trust between them. Anyway, just to say he can’t actually break up just because he wants or he’s liking her.
