It’s not about her being dumb or a loser. The issue is that she only cares about what she wants to do, what…
Why should she?

The unexpected consequence of Xie Lounan’s outburst has lead to a lot of great think pieces and character analysis. Kinda glad there was one episode today. It gave me time to read some great writing and will bring a different perspective when watching the show.

She’s not with Huanrui. She just has or had a film and television contract with Yehua.

If she only cared about herself she wouldn’t have helped those children, she wouldn’t listen to her family, and she wouldn’t have helped treat Xiao Huan’s illness when they were at odds.

The misunderstanding is not one sided and the one who can break the gridlock won’t so why should she take all the heat and Xiao Huan’s role in the misunderstanding be ignored?

The truth is many people are angry at her for not loving a man over everything else.

The editing is a problem too. And it can make or break a scene. There’s some scenes I want to try re-editing and might when I have more time.

While in Kumor’s camp, Cangcang is injured by an arrow. It leads to her confessing some of her true feelings due to pain and delirium. Xiao Huan watches over her during the whole time, basically not letting many people near her. When she wakes I think he’s quite ill too and then she ends of taking care of him. And it’s through this period of mutual caretaking that they break the gridlock.

If I remember correctly, this show utilised their new editing van technology so they could shoot and edit on the spot. I feel like there were even a decent number of reshoots too. It lost a few episodes though so if it was tightly edited, this could have thrown some things out of whack.

When people were complaining about a few minutes I thought it was exaggeration to then be shocked by it really being 2 minutes. But I’ve lived through SJFY so this is still bearable.😂
The script is weird.
I kinda feel like the show should have started with the Jianghu arc and that arc should have been longer so we could get to know the characters in “normal” settings. Then we could better understand how the court, treachery, and the intrigues have warped things between them in the palace arc. And I think there needed to be more scenes of Cangcang interacting with her family and them treating her well so people could see how the situation was complicated for her. If the audience has already formed a bond with the characters and can see the complexity from all sides, the angst will seem more reasonable (Although I also think it needs to be shortened). Then Xinjiang arc is for reconciliation and healing (not that weird reveal in the drama) I still think the original arrow injury plotline from the book was good. Then, after they’re a team again, they go to fight Lingbi Sect or return to the palace etc.

Modern dramas have bad scripts too😅 Anyway she’s hired script consultants.
A lot of people are pushing her to modern dramas but modern dramas are even less popular and it’s hard to get quality ones. They’re cheaper to make and they’re quicker to shoot though so there are benefits too. Age is also less of a problem. I’m wondering if now that she’ll be considered for more mature roles would she be able to get dramas with suspense or crime themes?
I really want to see my genius boyfriend. Have you heard of it?

I’m so mad! These two legit have the aura and looks of Alphas and Emperor and Empress. That is so rare right now. They naturally have presence and tension-half the work is done for the screenwriter. Give them a true love-hate relationship with a real equal tit for tat battle of wills that progresses into catching feelings and true loyalty and love and it would have exploded.

I can appreciate that everyone wants Xiao Ran to get more quality scripts but let’s not inadvertently step on her hard work either. There is no such thing as a wasted role. Xiao Ran said so herself. Every role is an opportunity for her to showcase her skills and beauty to others and in an environment where exposure is everything that’s all that matters. Even Ling Cangcang, who is mired in controversy, has benefits in that she’s gained a lot of fans.

Exactly. The writers didn’t do a good job at portraying the fl. cos how can you tell me so so oblivious but…
Because the show was lazy and used Du Tingxin. It’s telling and telling a story will never work as well as showing the story. The book has a better setup but it was skipped. The characters each undergo a life or death situation in a short space of time that helps them clear the air and start afresh.

Then the author should have called out the screenwriter not the actress. The actress didn’t write the script.

Yeah but to be honest the old IP is not necessarily the problem because the script was written within the filming period. I’ve read the book and there’s not enough overlap to say they heavily relied on the source. So they could have updated it if they wanted to but they didn’t.
Xiao Ran said she only had part of the script when it started and I guessed as much after watching the first few episodes. Cangcang is pretty much perfect in those episodes and I’d argue it’s a 121 feeling with the Cangcang in the book. You can understand why she took the role. Then it gets weird and I realised she probably didn’t have the script that far otherwise why take it. That said she’s doing a good job with what was given and now she’s hiring script consultants.

I wanted to talk about self substitution and dreamgirls but thought it would only cause more trouble. Cdramas are pandering more and more to them in female centric stories and I think it’s ruining them. It always results in a weakened FL lead in order to prop up the ML or there’s whitewashing. This show seems to be of this type but on the extreme end. It won’t let the FL have a moment of glory to herself. They’re either reverse her triumph later on or have the ML jump up to save her.

Tbh, I feel like the show is weird because the screenwriter is sacrificing everything to show how wonderful noble and/or smart all the male characters are with the cheesy politics and plotting but it’s ruining the show. If I want dude politics, I’ll watch Nirvana in Fire.

Yeah, the drama is clearer. It’s just the palace part was a bit strange. There should have been angst but not so much blame put on Cangcang by the show. Otherwise her attitude in Xinjiang will seem flippant(I also think she should have been kidnapped like the original rather than run). In the book she’s genuinely confused and frustrated by him and the hot and cold behaviour but it’s just given a passing glance. The scene with Du Tingxin revealing everything was too weak too. It should have been Cangcang getting shot by an arrow after trying to save him. Because the aftermath, when Cangcang is healing and Xiao Huan subsequent illness, is you can see how much Cangcang loves Xiao Huan through her complicated emotions and how sincere Xiao Huan is to Cangcang. The Xinjiang arc is a fresh start for them to rebuild their relationship and heal but the focus is on politics that romance viewers probably don’t care about. Now everything is still stuck in that weirdly toxic atmosphere of “but he’s so good to you”.
