If it sticks to the original storyline, technically no one.
Nah, not really. I heard there’s some hints of jealousy in the novel but there’s no full blown love triangle with SCH involved. For the drama, I’m not sure SCH has any romantic plot line at all.

I did check them out but wasn’t interested in the end. I don’t really like Guo Jing Ming’s directing so I don’t watch his works unless there’s a special reason.

Cinematography is important but to me being able to shoot people well is part of it. I actually think it’s the most important because stories are told through characters. If a director can’t highlight characters well, the story suffers especially if it is character driven.
Xie Ze doesn’t seem good for these types of stories or heavily emotional stories for that reason. He can shoot interior scenes well, as long as the focus isn’t on people. He also has a sense of composition in the long shots. Also, if he is obsessed with candle lighting, he really needs a good lighting engineer. In actuality, his key strength is story rhythm. When I watch his stuff, I always think he’d be better as an editor than director although I think his storytelling method is too simple.
I haven’t watched any of the listed dramas due to lack of interest but I have seen clips. Out of the dramas I have watched, I tend to like the cinematography of older dramas. The technology seems better now but the actual technical ability seems more hit and miss in dramas. It could just be me though. When I started watching Chinese media, it was mostly films so my standards might be different because films have higher requirements.
MYCM wrapped up yesterday. Congrats to all the cast! Wishing the show a good broadcast and high ratings! Got some video of Xiao Ran at the wrap-up below: https://m.weibo.cn/detail/5120573854190122

Zhao Lusi is styled very well in the drama so she looks good but the actual filming of the drama doesn’t look good. It has the same straightforward, muddied feeling as JJL and RoaTF. It’s like the opening of RoaTF, Xiao Ran is also very beautiful due to Nie Sangyu having a little styling, but the actually filming doesn’t look good. The beauty of the shot depends solely on the styling of the person rather than on the skill of the camera.
Xie Ze also received a lot of criticism and negative attention before he started shooting Pearl Girl because of how he shot JJL and RoaTF so there was a lot of pressure on him to shoot Pearl Girl better than JJL and RoaTF. I remember he locked his Weibo account because of it.
I say JJL and RoaTF production and shooting were wonky mostly due to a combination of BTS, filming leaks, and shows filmed around the same period but with vastly different results. Youku changed the filters on JJL after it started airing, and even aired “raw” versions of some key scenes during its broadcast. There were a lot of comments on the difference between the raw shots/footage and the final product. Even the dubbing had differences. In RoaTF, Xiao Ran basically looks fine in all the BTS, makeup video, and photos/videos taken by other cast members but the drama has a different effect suggesting the issue is with the shooting/production. This is especially true since ToDoI was shot immediately after RoaTF and Li Binghe is considered very beautiful.
Anyway, everyone has different preferences and opinions. There does not have to be a “we”. Based off watching PXR in other works, this is my opinion. Your opinion is also valid. As, I’ve already said, it’s okay if you don’t think Xiao Ran is good looking, bland, or has lost her charm. My opinion won’t change but I understand not everyone will feel the same way about her and that’s fine.

It’s okay. I don’t think you’re a hater. You’ve been polite and there are others who have asked/said similar things.
I’m not sure why she doesn’t dub. It could be a producer choice. It could also be due to the role. She graduated from a top notch broadcasting school so there should be nothing wrong with her Mandarin pronunciation and there didn’t seem to be any problems with The Legend or To Our Dreamland of Ice which both use her original voice. She self-dubbed for Fangs of Fortune but the overall dubbing of that show was weird.
I hope more people can recognise her too. She’s in this weird situation where a lot of people think she’s doing poorly but her shows have actually either done okay by producer standards, made money, or the ratings are okay. She actually has one of the highest CVB ratings for actresses due to her show Unshakable Faith.

Meh, most of her dramas haven’t disappointed me because I think she always does well with what she’s given to work with and lately she’s the only Cdrama actress I follow but I hope the upcoming dramas can meet your expectations. Also, she didn’t dub herself in Romance of a Twin Flower so it’s again an issue with production. The self-dubbed goodbye message she did after the show aired was well received.

There was no lost charm otherwise her most recent cameos wouldn’t be so well received. Her performance in Melody of a Golden Age actually made it on the Datawin of the show despite being a guest star- which I understand is really rare. I can’t speak for the other actresses but it’s a known fact, even outside of fans, that there have been issues with PXR’s drama makeup/styling/shooting. Many passer-by say this. If you want to chastise me for focussing solely on makeup, that’s fair because the quality of a drama requires many factors but there’s definitely been issues with production which includes things like makeup, styling, lighting, filters, shooting, etc. Xiao Feng, especially in Xizhou, is a near perfect execution of costume design and styling-everything from makeup to fit of the clothing is pretty much inline with the person. The director can also shoot. The problem is if the debut is 100% in final presentation then even if subsequent shows are 99% let alone the 70-80% I’ve seen, viewers will feel a difference. Two of her costume drama shows were shot by Xie Ze who cannot shoot people at all. Romance of a Twin Flower in particular barely had costume design/ styling-it mostly relied 100% on PXR’s character creation ability which is mind blowing for me as someone who sews costumes as costumes/styling can literally make or break a character and are often the audience’s first impression. The only scene with decent make-up in Romance of a Twin Flower is the opening (and a few Nie Sangyu shots) and she’s very beautiful there but it was messed up by the director’s camera movements. And if you think she lost her beauty, look at To Our Dreamland of Ice which was shot immediately after Romance of a Twin Flower. Li Binghe is gorgeous but the difference is the overall production including makeup, styling, and shooting is well done. The problem seems to have been solved though and Tales of Dark River, Phoenix Stage, and The Boundless Bright Moon are all gorgeous-especially Tales of Dark River. Mu Yumo’s beauty is really crazy so it feels to me it is indeed a makeup/production problem. Anyway, this is just my opinion. If you think she doesn’t look good or has lost her charm then that’s okay too. Everyone has different preferences ☺️.
Shining Just For You had really good makeup too because it was the same team as GBMP but it didn’t show many of her feminine outfits just her official uniform, which was a shame. Her pink and green outfit was absolutely gorgeous. ToDoI is really beautiful if you can find it. Li Binghe was like a modern Xiao Feng in terms of beauty.
It’s those 3 for now. She has older dramas too. I recommend Jun Jiu Ling and Romance of a Twin Flower for costume dramas. Unfortunately the makeup isn’t as good as the shows that have yet to be released. To Our Dream of Ice is good for period dramas. And Unshakeable Faith is good too. For guest roles, she’s in episode 1, 5, and 6 of Fangs of Fortune. And she’s also a guest star in the movie, The Legend.
