Seems this drama is either a "you love" or "you hate". Those who dislike it, criticize the exaggerated acting. But I thought the director has explained this part early on in episode 1? FL gave a narration on why she was in the Capital and why she had to dress up as a man. She need to convince the public of a playboy persona, someone silly and dumb so Han family can stay out of the crown prince drama. And how best to portray this but be loud, brash, and exaggerated? But when she is alone, she is actually a quiet and reflective character.

I haven't finish it yet... But read a review which imply ending is bittersweet. But I suggest jumping into the drama directly w/o reading reviews or watch trailers. Becos it read/looks like a very heavy drama with complicated plot, which will make you not want to watch it. But the storytelling is beautifully done (with some comedy to ease the tensions) and "suck" you into the drama from EP 1.

But I tot to check out his last drama, Secrets of the Three Kingdoms (it is based very loosely on actual history). And MY MIND IS BLOWN!!! It has a similar plot as The Heiress: Emperor has a twin bro hidden from the world, and he is brought in to replace the dying emperor in secret... (similar impersonation plot).
Excellent cinematography, strong female leads and excellent acting. And oh, great OST too. Usually I dislike such political dramas base on historical times, but the politics is easy to understand here. It has some comedy too. And it took my mind off The Heiress, that I forgot abt it last few days....
I am watching Secrets of the 3 Kingdoms now becos of The Heiress. I am very impressed with the pacing and direction of The Heiress so checking out the director Peter Yau's other works. Tbh I was initially surprised such a serious drama director would take up The Heiress? But now I understand.... He seems to have a preference for script that has impersonation as a main plot point. Only finished episode 3 but I'm really impressed! The art direction, plot pace and acting are great. I usually don't like serious dynasty dramas, but this, having an identical twin impersonate as the king without any training and instruction but just thrown into the role, is very interesting **thumbs up**

I actually kinda regretted posting the plot spoiler.... realized I might have spoiled it for others. But pls note, even after watching that teaser trailer (dunno why Tencent and WeTv titled it teaser, it was the entire plot summary...), I subscribed to WeTv so I can watch the episodes earlier.
There are a few intimate scenes between FL and ML (aft they got married) in this teaser that actually give me goosebumps. I hv skipped entire episode in cdrama when love scenes got too draggy.... But here, a few short glimpses are giving me goosebumps!! So yes, it is tragic, but damn, their chemistry!! I will continue until the end....
