I'm going to be an optimist and see the romance as an addition to provide more scenes for Xu Kai. After the whole clusterf*** concluded, Yu Zheng may have realized his attack on Xu Kai failed and he needed to treat him better if he wants to keep him.

Again, this is just my hopeful spin on what we've seen so far.

Mei Zhuyu was pretty damn serious, and Xu Kai's characters in 800 Meters and Fire Investigator don't look like they're played for laughs either. Same with a Cup of Love.

I'm looking forward to Xu Kai being able to show his more comedic or light-hearted side. I'm looking forward to that scene with the bearded bride.

There's a gender bias on reddit and pretty much everywhere else. MLs get away with so much toxic behavior while FLs get picked on constantly for anything.

I don't know the ins and outs of China's entertainment ratings systems, but I do know that Mei Zhuyu and Wu Zhen BOTH were rated among the top 5 most popular characters when the drama aired and for a while afterward. That means viewers were able to appreciate this character and this performance.

You should expect that, when you post an opinion, others may agree or disagree with you. We know you're not attacking us. But as you keep responding, you are doubling down on your "attack" on Xu Kai (see "very overrated").

Here's something I don't understand. You gave She and Her Perfect Husband a decent rating. The ML is similar to Mei Zhuyu in that they're both introverted and take a while to crack open. Did you have the same problems with Xu Kai's performance and/or the character?

Most actors wouldn't dare to take on the role of Mei Zhuyu. It's not an easy one to tackle.

It sounds like you prefer the millions of MLs who start off cruel, cold, and/or angry but find love and turn simpy. And they all have complicated backgrounds which make for angsty flashbacks. They need their flashy clothes, masks, eye makeup, and bloody violence to turn up the heat.

I'm looking at Fated Hearts, When Destiny something somethings a Demon, Love in the Clouds, A Dream Within a Dream, and on and on. They all follow the same formula for the ML. And all the main actors are interchangeable.

I dare any of these actors to be as stripped down and barefaced in their closeups as Xu Kai was.

Plus the plant demon.

He still thinks he's going to win.

Why do you think it's at #2?

If it gives Xu Kai more screentime, I'm all for it. But I hope it doesn’t detract from the buddy angle.
