Wow, so many of my favorites listed in this article! I really enjoyed the representation of the whole spectrum of fathers in Dramaland. I would add the father in The Bond to the list of neglectful parents. He still makes me cringe. But then there is the father in Extraordinary Attorney Woo, to revive my faith in the fathers of Dramaland. Thanks Shiro, I always look forward to your articles.
Loved the relationship of the main couple, they were awesome together ❤️ But I can remember only the main…
Wang He Di’s roommate, who wanted to draw a webtoon and Si Jia who was a college friend and worked with the main couple at the car company. This is such a good drama, hopefully more people will discover it now that Love Between Fairy and Devil is so popular.
Remembrance of Things Past is a favorite. I would also add The Rational Life. All 3 couples work through problems in realistic ways and the drama never relies on annoying tropes for cheap suspense. Thanks for the article, I have added some titles to my ptw list.
Thank you for your hard work on this wonderful article. I love the way you analyzed the data from your survey and I appreciate your insights and the thoughtful questions you posed. Like everyone else I have my favorites, but it’s always great to know what the rest of the MDL community is watching. The trend toward Cdramas in the top 10 coincides with my recent watch experience. I agree that if I’m looking for fantasy or historical I turn to Cdramas and for modern dramas I keep an eye on the Kdramas. Often I find that the production value of modern Kdramas is higher, though that’s no guarantee that it will be good, it’s just something I appreciate like good cgi.
Thank you for this beautiful and detailed article on one of the best Cdramas this year. You covered all the great features of this production. And Dylan Wang’s stylist deserves an award.
Shiro, I always look forward to your articles. You touch on the many unique aspects of Dramaland. I am a moody binge watcher and have several different genres going at once. For me, bingeing and dropping (another one of your great articles) are closely connected. If a drama goes off track, runs out of steam or just isn’t for me, I can ditch it after a few hours instead of wasting weeks. Also if I’m unsure about a drama I will check the reviews on MDL after it finishes airing. I’ve saved myself some heartache that way (I’m looking at you Twenty Five, Twenty One,) and I confess to looking up the ending of Our Beloved Summer before I started watching it. Once in awhile I get sucked into watching something as it airs, but it’s not a satisfying experience. If the drama’s really good, I get frustrated waiting week to week and if it’s not so good, I will drift away. Bingeing by mood is definitely my comfort zone.
Well hi again, it is so nice to recognise people who come back and read more of my articles (and comment). I do…
Something in the Rain is one of the first dramas I watched and is still one of my faves. But I bet we agree that Jung Hae In looks good in anything- or less, as in While You Were Sleeping.
Great detailed article! It’s nice to see J dramas getting some love and I found some new titles to add to my PTW list. I was also pleased to see my all time favorites Todome no Kiss and Deathnote included. Thank you!
Thanks for this super fun article, Shiro! After your article “Umbrellas of Dramaland,” I can’t watch a drama without noticing them-most recently in Extraordinary Attorney Woo where there is a great umbrella scene. So now I will notice every hoodie too! My favorites from the past are the pink hoodie from Strong Woman Do Bong Soon and Ji Chang Wook’s black hoodie and killer shades in Healer. And of course any hoodie worn by Jung Hae In gets my attention:)
Thank you both for your article and the chance to know more about PHY’s work. She is intense and detailed and I can see why there is a stretch of time between her dramas. The first time I looked up a writer was after watching Chicago Typewriter. I was so in awe of the creativity in that script and then I discovered that the writer, Jin Soo Wan, had written some of my other favorites as well. Now I always check the writers and sometimes the directors. MDL is my go to source for information, so my deepest thanks to everyone who makes this such an awesome site.
Hi Shiro. At least your husband tries to watch some dramas. Mine flat out refuses, which is a shame because I think he’d really like Beyond Evil, Military Prosecutor Doberman and all the stuff that blows up in The K2.
Shiro!! “Because I am…aGod.” I love your articles and that little touch of humor that you add. I have a friend who years later still thanks me for recommending Crash Landing on You. It was her introduction to K-dramas and I have to admit that I feel pretty good about that. One thing that limits my recommendations is the streaming services. There is no point in recommending something if I or my friend can’t watch it. That’s what I like about MDL, the Drama Details page often lists where one can watch things and this is especially important as more streaming services are buying up Korean content.
Does anybody know whether WRTW soundtrack will ever be on Apple Music???
It is. I found it by typing in Ye Xuanqing and Tiger Hu who sing one of the songs. I added the song to my library and there was a caption “Show Complete Album.” That’s how I found it. Often Chinese drama titles are in Chinese, so if you’re typing in English you may not find it. I often look for one of the major singers, find their song and then the album the way I described above. Hope this helps. (Sometimes it helps to search YouTube first to get the names of the songs and singers.)
Thanks for the great article. You got me thinking of all the drama songs I’ve saved in playlists over the years. Often there is just one song in a drama that will stand out, but Our Beloved Summer had song after song after song, and they all echoed the mood of the scenes they underscored. It’s a gem. I would also recommend the soundtracks of the Chinese dramas The Bond, and the Long Ballad. The artists include Zhou Shen, Diamond Zhang, Ray Wang and A Run to name a few.
