It’s great to see an editorial and a CDrama one at that! Thank you for your well written article and recommendations for some of the better short dramas. Some viewers complain that short dramas often lack character and plot development but I think that’s also true of many longer dramas these days and if I’m disappointed at the end of a short drama I’ve only wasted 3-4 hours compared to 30+ hours for the longer ones. (My biggest disappointment was watching a 40 episode drama only to find out everyone died at the end.) I have become very cautious with longer dramas.
Your review was spot on. I waited until Lovely Runner ended so I could binge it, but what a shallow, muddled disappointment. I love the lead actors and was really looking forward to this, but half way through I started fast forwarding through whole sections and now I’m struggling to finish it. The constant crying is annoying, the side characters are irritating, and the plot circles the same story in every time slip and barely moves forward. Fewer episodes and a tighter script would have been better.
Is the ending sad? Does it have love triangles? If yes, who does she ends with? Or she ends alone? Someone pls…
Yes, the ending is sad if you like stories where love conquers all. I put off watching this for a long time because I heard it was sad. I just finished it and I highly recommend it. Hae Soo doesn’t end up with either man she fell in love with, but you see it coming. While it’s sad, you see people paying the consequences for their behavior and I found that rewarding. She does spend her final days with someone who loves her and is devoted to her well being, which I found more poignant than a contrived happy ending. Also Lee Joon Gi’s performance as Wang So is mesmerizing-I think it’s one of his best roles.
It’s wonderful to see another editorial. This brought back so many memories. Thank you for your hard work! Whenever people ask me what I like about Kdramas, I always say stories and music. I remember the first time a soundtrack hit me was when I watched The K2. Now my Kdrama master playlist contains 101 songs for 6 hours and 27 minutes of listening time, and I’m still adding to it. Some of my favorite soundtracks: Cinderella and the Four Knights, Dr. John, Hyena and Twinkling Watermelon.
Lol, thank you for taking the time to read through my monolithic block of text. This show was just so infuriating…
You’re welcome. I realize your review took a lot of thought, time and effort. It was refreshing to read an honest analysis of this drama’s flaws balanced against its few good points.
Thank you for your review. I wish I had watched your version. Soramame’s character was all over the map and so little was shown about her time in Paris that it felt like she regressed when she returned home. I kept waiting for Oto to break out of his shell and do something to show Soramame that he cared, but he was always late, leaving early and putting her last. Even in the last episode, she has to go to him. Are we supposed to believe that she’s last in his actions, but first in his heart? Their reunion would have had more impact if he had taken time from his “busy” career to go to her hometown. I was so annoyed by the end that this is the first time I fast forwarded through a love confession. Uchi no Mesume wa, Kareshi ga Dekinai!! also by Kitagawa is one of my favorite dramas, so I had high hopes for this one. So much could have been made of Soramame’s relationship with her mother and her fear of abandonment vs. Otto’s inability to express himself-that would have been more drama and tension than the cliched misunderstandings created by a jealous woman. Good luck with your writing. This review was a great analysis.
I’m so glad you discovered one of my favorite dramas. Ji Sung’s performance of the multiple personalities was incredible. I also recommend “Secret,” if you like Ji Sung.
Thank you so much for this wonderful article. I truly appreciate your hard work and hope you will keep writing. Your observations really made me smile as I remember the cultural differences I discovered in dramas over the years. Many have been covered in other comments, but I would add the popularity of karaoke and karaoke bars-it’s just not a thing in my country. I’m also surprised by the amount of slapping that goes on in dramas I’ve watched from Korea, China and Thailand. I hope this is just dramatization and doesn’t really happen. In my country someone would call the police.
I just started listening to the audiobook for Three Body Problem, the first few chapters are a slog but once it…
The beginning of Three-Body (the CDrama) is methodical and requires all my attention. Still, it’s intriguing and makes me keep watching. In addition to the story, the cgi and the soundtrack are good. (a Xueran Chen soundtrack) Kudos to you for listening to the audiobook. Netflix must be planning multiple seasons or they have changed the story because the original is so layered and somewhat philosophical.
Yes, Three body is on my list. It's just that it has second season, so if I watch now I might not recall the story…
I know what you mean. I watched Alice In Borderland in a previous slump and when I got to the end they announced season 2. I haven’t watched season 2 yet because it’s been so long I need to rewatch the end of season 1. And now they’ve announced season 3. At this point I might as well wait until it’s done.
Thank you for your article and it’s nice to see another editorial on MDL. For me Drama Slump equals boredom. I’ve grown tired of cold, bossy CEO’s and childish dim witted heroines. I liked all of your suggestions for getting out of the slump. Right now I have switched to Sci Fi, a genre I don’t usually watch. I’m watching Three-Body and it’s keeping me on my toes, plus it has a great production vibe. If someone is looking for a good short drama, I would also recommend An Ancient Love Song.
My thoughts exactly… it was well on it‘s way to be my 2023 fav but I guess it wasn’t meant to be.🥲If…
Thanks for the advice. I read another review that said to stop at ep. 34, so I definitely won’t watch beyond that, but already it’s lost the spark of the early episodes. I have lowered my rating and removed it from my rewatch list. The acting is good, especially Liu Yu Ning, Alen Fang and He Lan Dou so that’s keeping me going right now.
