I read your synopsis/review AFTER watching the drama just now. The intro when you wrote "Another version of the..." and it went on and on, SO long ...it killed me. I LOVED reading it so much, even more than watching the drama itself. I love clever writers. Haha. This drama wasn't my personal taste, although I definitely enjoyed the chemistry. I watched this last July 2024 on RakutenViki and I think its worth it. I rated it 7☆ (-3 because there were some tedious aspects here and there, and it needed a bit more chemistry). The listing says its a romantic comedy, and it does start out that way, but the overall feeling is more like a melodrama. You have to be in the mood, probably. Anyway, I copy/pasted my VIKI review for you.
"I liked both this Chinese version and the older Taiwanese version. They both have their charms and failures. (I haven't seen the Korean version yet, but the Japanese one sucked because it ended halfway through with no part-two). There are so many interesting comparisons between versions. I barely fast-forwarded through scenes of either, as both were entertaining enough.
This C-drama version is more believable and serious, and the ML is calm and had resolute integrity. The T-drama is more ridiculous and comedic but is very heartfelt, but the ML in that version is very mean and wishy-washy in the first half. Both ML's have chemistry but the FL in this C-version lacks it. Due to the story's focus on pain, tragedy and healing, there isn't enough room for intimacy, so there's only a few kiss scenes. In this C-version, the FL stays angry and bitter for WAAAY too many episodes, which was exhausting.
The side characters are all casted well in both. I LOVE the families. Both of the Anna's are equally evil, but I thought it was super weird and inappropriate that she attended the main leads' wedding in this C-version.
The last episode was rushed in this C-drama. Both series had happy endings. 💗"

Edit: I watched it, and wow! That was surprisingly pleasant! Its such a breath of fresh air that the leads had no misunderstandings. They got to have an authentic romance with great chemistry and a happy ending!

Other people seemed to love that Ke Chun / Ma Xiaoyu drama, "Royal Highness Princess", but I didn't really like it. SPOILER AHEAD. Both guys love the FL to the point of control and/or obsession, and the script didn't compensate for that with genuine romance. So, it just felt empty (to me), lacking butterflies or chemistry. I thought Ke Chun had a more pleasant demeanor and personality, while Ma Xiaoyu seemed like he was always having a nervous breakdown. He was classic brooding, confident ML with everyone, but he was so over-emotional with the FL, that he came off as insecure and weak. Ke Chun stood out as more calm and put-together, even though he was the villain.
I do like these yin-yang storylines, because I'm a fan of mystery WITH romance (sci-fi and supernatural genres). I HOPE there are more like these, or more will be made... but with a happier ending. :) MDL user Brunie03 commented below that there is another and left a link. :)
