The attack was orchestrated by his uncle (Wei Yan), because Xie Zheng was looking into the tragic fall of Jin Zhou and the death of his father from 16 years ago, and Wei Yan has stuff that he wants from back then to remain hidden

16 years ago, because of the evil schemes of the previous emperor to kill the current crown prince and make his favourite son crown prince, Wei Yan inevitably became a pawn and caused the deaths of the Xie army and the Meng family who were then also labelled traitors, also the death of the crown prince etc.

Wei Yan did all of that in order to protect Shu Fei, the emperor's concubine who is also his lover, but Shu Fei dies, and Wei Yan went sort of crazy and killed a bunch of people in the palace

Then in order to protect her name even in death, Wei Yan decided to become the evil prime minister he is known to be currently

oh also Xie Zheng's mother (who is also Wei Yan's younger sister) traded her own life in order to protect Xie Zheng (she made Wei Yan take Xie Zheng under his wing and train him), but Xie Zheng doesn't know that and thinks she abandoned him which is so sad
