I'm also not so keen with the love triangle, it's like a waste of screen time... Oh my venus didn't have a love triangle and its much more better in terms of character development and you can really feel the excitement as their love for each other grow stronger.

Also, speaking of 'atonement' the title of the book where the photo was inserted 'What Men live by' by Leo Tolstoy is also about atonement.

I just finished watching the movie version. There it was told that his parents died in car accident and he became an orphan. The grandpa who raised him was not really his grandpa, the village people took turns in feeding him... it was also explained why he put his boat on the top of the hill, because he was scared that if he put it in the water it might sail without him. He's scared of losing everything he loves, like his parents and his grandpa. That's why he's not keen being in a relationship.

She's more scared of her feelings, that's why she's harsh on him. More like a defense mechanism, trying to ward off her feelings because when she does fell for him, it will be deep. In the end, i bet she'll be the one ending up crying once he leave.

Me thinking its a family photo and the small boy was him. It was mentioned in earlier episode that his parents died when he was very young and his grandad looked after him. They only show the mother because it's typical for a child to miss a mom.
