I just finished episode 15... and I am a wreck!! Wonderful, amazing, fantastic acting from Lee Joon Gi!! He deserves all the BEST ACTOR Awards for this role.
If you have not seen episode 15 yet, don’t watch it (or at least not the last 15 minutes), until episode 16 is out next week because you will spend the next 5 days wondering what will happen.
I desperately want - no NEED! - a happy ending for Do Hyun Soo... but I don’t know if the writers will be generous enough to give that to us. So I am bracing myself for a tragic ending and my heart to be broken for this loving couple.
Aside from A Korean Odyssey (which I have not watched yet, but will now do...soon), ALL your favorites are also in my Top 20 favorites, with Goblin as my no. 1 (it has a special place in my heart since this was my very first kdrama and I have seen it countless times since I first saw it in November 2017!). Thank you so much for your article ... great lessons indeed from great dramas!
Thank you for this list. Some of them I was aware of, but others were new to me. Now I know which dramas to avoid.…
Everything you wrote is exactly how I think and feel! And since I also LOVE Kimura Takuya and have been avoiding his dramas with sad endings, I might be able to try later on A Beautiful Life (hopefully!). Thanks for putting my feelings about HE and SE in dramas and movies in writing. ?
I stopped watching Mr. sunshine on 22 episode because I got too scared that someone from the cast must die. Now…
I was truly shocked and devastated (to the point of being literally speechless) after watching the last two episodes of Mr. Sunshine. I could not move on from the Traumatic sadness for days. I did not even rewatch a single scene of it for 2 years (but I had to sit through it all over again when I watched it a few months ago with my Mom... don’t ask!).
So it was a good call on your part to stop at episode 22 and make that the open but happier ending to one of the most beautifully done series from South Korea.
And (MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD)
they ALL did die in the end except for 1 major character and some side characters. Even a cameo of handsome Kim Min Jae in the very last scenes could not get me out of the doldrums after the show ended!!
i hope i can watch all 50 in the near future lol it's just harder to watch older dramas, it feels so outdated…
Ahhh I know what you mean. And Netflix even removes kdramas (and other Asian dramas) after sometime, so those shows I have earmarked to go back to are oftentimes not there anymore (if I wait too long, because of my very long PTW list!).
I go to Kissasian and Dramacool often but only to download the files, which I watch later on. I don't like watching by streaming on their sites because they keep on buffering (my ISP's fault hehe). And I'm sure the horrible advertisements and pop-ups are preventing you from going to those sites more often? I solved that by using several adblock apps on my browsers.

That's true... though I am an "older person" so I don't mind too much seeing older dramas with "older feels". The reason I can't go back to them is the constant release of so many good shows! I can hardly keep up & it really is affecting my daily sleeping hours. hahaha

I voted for only 6, because that's all I have watched from your PTW list. But the first 5 shows on my list of votes are very good shows indeed. (You must watch Splash Splash Love already -- it's just 2 episodes after all, but very satisfying, imho. ;-) )
I have many of these shows on MY own PTW list. :) So I will be coming back to check the results so I could also be guided for my next to watch shows. Thanks for sharing your list.
I only completed 15/50 (and most of them are in the top 20, except for 1) and I dropped 1 show. Most of the other shows in the list have been in my Plan to Watch list for years! Maybe it's time to seriously start watching them.
(Currently watching It's Okay to Not Be Okay and I bet it will not only be nominated but will win and dominate the Baeksang Awards next year!)
Thank you for this article! We are currently on "home quarantine" in the Philippines, so aside from housework, there really is not much else to do, except read books, chat online and watch dramas! ;-)
I clicked your article because of Gong Yoo's Goryeo General photo (LOVE him!!), but was also happy to read that your first drama recommendation was "Oh My Venus" (one of my top 5 favorites of all time). It is one of my go-to kdramas when I need a pick-me-up - So Ji Sub and Shin Min Ah NEVER fail to make me smile, laugh and fall in love in this drama. The 3-way bromance in this drama was also great. And that scene you described outside the door - one of my favorite "encouraging scenes" ever.
Now I am excited to watch your other 2 recommendations, which have long been in my to-watch list. Thanks again for your recommendations.
The summary sounds romantic no? It definitely gives a lot of potential. But the potential is falling empty. This…
I also was hoping that the movie would begin to have depth by the middle of the story... but the writer/director missed the opportunity to make the film better than just an "ordinary romance". I gave it a 7.5 only for the acting because Kim Rae Won and Gong Hyo Jin were great, as usual.
I really love to see the interaction of Seri & NK squad. And I love they play the same game while drinking beer.I'm…
Ohhh... I really, really hope that they will have their boy and girl twins!! Thanks for saying that this writer's other dramas all have happy endings!! That gives me great hope, especially after the ending of episode 14!!
WTH!!!!Except for the fact that Cheo Chal Geong (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) is alive, I love the entire episode…
I just finished episode 14 as well... and I agree with you! That is the only way our main couple could have a happy ending, living together peacefully and happily till they are both old and grey!
Just finished this drama! beautiful plot line, really enjoyed it, I was just a little upset in the end that everyone…
Now to answer your question on how I came up with nearly 100 years, and not just 30 years, here is my theory of their timeline:
2017 - Kim Shin went back to "nothingness". 2026 - Kim Shin came back and married Eun Tak. Eun Tak died in the car accident a few days later. (sob) 2056 - Sunny died and ascended the stairs to heaven with Wang Yeo
* 2056 - Assuming Wang Yeo and Sunny got reincarnated immediately, they would be born around this time.
*2086 - Assuming the actress Sunny and the policeman Wang Yeo met again at around age 30 while filming, they met in this year. - Kim Shin saw them in the movie set as he was on his way to another unknown country, leaving Korea again.
(Remember he has to move from one country to another every 20-30 years, and it is not only just Korea and Canada, because people will still remember how he looked like in 20 years, so he also has to move to another country, and then go back to Canada and Korea)
*2116 (Assuming he moved from the unknown country back to Canada after 30 years) - Kim Shin moved back into his Canadian house. The butler at this time could no longer be Deok Hwa because assuming that Deok Hwa was around 25 in 2017, he would have to be 124 yrs old already at this point. So the butler we see in Canada is already the grandson of Deok Hwa. - Kim Shin met Park So Min (the reincarnation of Eun Tak, her 2nd life) in the cemetery
So assuming all time skips were 30 years each time, Kim Shin waited for 90 years (and probably even more) since Eun Tak died in 2026 until he met her again as a high school student Park So Min.
Here is another even more interesting explanation of the timeline - based on the actual original script for Goblin's Finale (Episode 16).

Hi! I will answer your second question first:
When Kim Shin told Eun Tak that he met his first love in the past, what he actually said was "You passed by." (that's the English subtitles I read). And he was referring to a vision he had of Eun Tak in the classroom in 2016/17 during her graduation and she had the flowers. How did he get this vision? Because he saw the waitress in Goryo and she had the face of the teacher of Eun Tak who was always mean to her. The teacher was in the classroom at the time of Eun Tak's graduation. So when Kim Shin saw her as the waitress, he saw the teacher's future and Eun Tak happened to be in that exact scene. So Kim Shin was not referring to the waitress as his first love but to the real Eun Tak whom he will meet way into the future. I hope that clarifies things.
(I also thought that the waitress was his first love when I first watched that scene. I had to watch the scene again to understand what he was really saying.)
