He isn’t a normal human. He can see the spirts and he’s a very powerful Taoist cultivator. In the book they have no conflict. The only thing different about her is she’s the Cat Lord and needs to manage the Demon Market. He will go and help her do tasks. They have no conflicts between them in the novel. From time to time some demon or her cousin stir up trouble but that’s all. They have a happy life.

I think Kai is just fine in this role. He portrays MZY pretty close to how he is in the book. I do agree about the chemistry thing tho. He is not and he does not in the novel. He just has always had the ability to see the supernatural in the book. In the book tho his father was the previous cat lord who saved Wu Zhen to pay a debt to Wu Zhens mother for saving Mei Zhuyu as a child

In the book the Changxi palace crew have taken celibacy vow and abstain from alcohol. MZY was the equivalent of an outer disciple who was a once in a century talent. He was never meant to stay in Changxi palace much to his shifus dismay. So they made some small changes to this in the show for drama I guess
Makes sense. HJY character adds nothing of value to the drama
