I’m open to all types of BL dramas as long as they feel real and genuine. Over time, my experience has raised my standards - where I once watched shows I’d rate around a 6, I now rarely watch anything below an 8. Anything under 6 feels unwatchable to me.
When I rate a BL, I focus heavily on the chemistry between the main characters and the elements around: whether their interactions feel natural, whether they seem comfortable with each other, and whether the story is engaging and has substance beyond simply being about two boys liking each other. I also have a general impression that people tend to be overly sensitive, I don’t see heavier or potentially triggering themes as a negative in BL. Instead, I view them as realistic elements that help highlight real and important issues. I actually give a + to BLs that are not always happy go lucky.
Feel free to take a look at my list:
(the way I rate BL has changerd over time as I have gotten more experiece and knowledge of what a good BL actually is)
How I rate now:
1-5 - I stop watching/dropped
6 - Skipping boring parts, watch the few good parts. Not wasting more time than I have to on this.
7 - If it has good elementes but the overall story is kind of boring.
8 - If it's a good BL and would recomend people watching.
9-9.5 - if it's perfect, has the elements I am looking for.
10 - I don't give 10, only in the utterly rarest cases where actually it exeeded my perception of a perfect BL and changed the way I looked at BL. I have only rated one BL a 10 in my life.
I’m stricter in my ratings depending on which country the BL comes from. Countries that have produced a large number of BL dramas and have long experience in the genre are held to a higher standard. On the other hand, when a country is pushing boundaries within restrictive environments or censorship around BL, I tend to rate more generously, as they are clearly doing the best they can within their limitations.
