It made Qi Lian realize that he too was in a virtual world before. Because his old friend Chen died during a gang fight, Noah created a virtual friend for Qi Lian who is not dead but disabled to erase his painful memory of Chen.

My thought is Qi Lian felt depressed and guilty that his friend died during the gang fight, so his Dad made him undergo that experiment to release his painful memories. Now that Xiao Yuan showed up, she was, in reality, his old friend and knew Chen too, and by searching for her own memory she pulled Qi Lian back to reality. Before, Qi Lian still thought he had an old friend named Xu who was disabled but alive, but in reality, his old friend is not Xu but Chen who is dead.
Ep 12 doesn't make sense, even for a supernatural/fantasy drama [my theory below]
How can a lesser/territorial mountain spirit who couldn't prevent his lover from marrying someone, couldn't protect her life, and didn't know who exactly killed her, is able to wipe off the memory of the entire school except VP/fox, Seo Won, and Min Ji Ah; also Yoo Na and Woo Taek. He even changed Hae Na's behavior/attitude, too. Her being cold and treating Seo Won like a stranger doesn't make sense. Cos if just erasing memory she and Seo Won would go back with them being just colleagues. Since Ep 1, before she liked Seo Won, she had been always nice and friendly to him, not cold and distant.
Also, before everything happened, she and Bo Gyeom were not close either as seen in this episode.

I watched 6 episodes with subs, they're not perfect translations but I understand the convo. It's not clear if Peng Yuan, Xu Nuo's boyfriend, likes his business partner Cong Shan or not, but he is getting swayed, and the same situation also happens to Xu Nuo with Zhao Jin. Xu Nuo and Peng Yuan's relationship is definitely going towards a breakup since he focuses on the business startup with Cong Shan and his dad pushing him to be with her. I think the drama will not prolong this cheating thing, cos I saw on the airing calendar the emoji for Ep 13-14 is a lip/kiss. I take it as the kiss between Xu Nuo and Zhao Jin; she already broke up with Peng Yuan. Because there are still 10 more episodes to go after that, it seems like Xu Nuo and Zhao Jin still need to sort out their own problems for a smooth romance.
We also know that there are enough characters with marital problems. So it seems the drama theme is on that and the convos are heavy on the views/philosophy on singleness, marriage, divorce, and remarriage. It's not a drama for first-time lovers topic like most romance dramas released.
By the way, I never watch the K version so I don't have to compare/contrast. This is what I saw and felt watching the 6 episodes.
