Question: I am 9 episodes in. I dropped Dashing Youth because I didn't like it and thought it was too different…
I didn't watch DY as well, because the director is different, and the screenwriter is not the novel author, that's why you feel the tone is different. I just know SCH and SMY are support roles in that one and they helped the main characters to fight against Ye Ding Zhi in the end. They have very little screentime, so it doesn't matter if you skip that.
Glad to help! The brothers have enough scenes together, happy ending. The romance is very little, the FL is actually a projection of Su Muyu's desire for a peaceful life, which I wouldn't call it love. She's just a support role with little screentime. However, the brothers have deep bond from childhood and already become important half of each other. Highly recommend this drama! It's the most touching brotherhood I've seen in cdramas.
I was hesitant to watch it because of BL. I liked Blood of Youth and Dashing Youth, it had great stories and action.…
You're welcome! It's a wuxia drama, not BL. It's a story about the two brothers who overthrow the old ruler of an assassin organization, challenge imperial authority, and lead the organization toward freedom. The actions and special effects are better than the other two dramas. Definetely worth watching!
Yes, it's a martial arts drama with brotherhood, bromance is not the focus, but it worth watching. It's a story about the two brothers who overthrow the old ruler of an assassin organization, challenge imperial authority, and lead the organization toward freedom.
Just saw this after watching ep9, and honestly, I find it so interesting that I've always thought SMY as the idealistic…
Once you finish this drama, you may notice that Su Changhe’s core personality is completely different in the two shows. That’s why the author said his characters develop souls of their own and try to escape a fixed destiny.
Out of respect for this version of Su Changhe and the brotherhood, he decided to write a second season - so it wouldn’t be connected to TBOY.
❤️To future viewers — if you’re hesitating because of the low ratings on MDL, I want to tell you that this is one of the best wuxia dramas in recent years. Whether it’s the martial arts design, the visual effects, or the storytelling, this drama is widely recognized in China as a major hit of the year. It has attracted not only female audiences but also many male viewers and people of wide age groups.
Many of the low MDL ratings came from viewers who disliked the fact that the leads of this drama were villains in the other two series. In addition, this drama contains very little romance; instead, it focuses on action scenes and brotherhood, which may not appeal to some viewers’ personal tastes. And this drama doesn't have main role FL like other dramas, all the female characters are support roles in terms of screentime. It's a story about two male leads (brotherhood, not BL).
As for this drama’s relationship with The Blood of Youth and Dashing Youth, the author has already clarified it:
When writing the novel The Blood of Youth, he was particularly fond of Su Mu Yu, a “villain” from the assassin organization Dark River, so he decided to create a standalone story for him. However, he didn’t expect the characters to “grow a free soul of their own” and choose their own fate. He later admitted that he regretted giving SMY and SCH a tragic ending too early in The Blood of Youth.
Therefore, he suggested readers treat Blood River as a parallel timeline. Actor Gong Jun also mentioned during a livestream that this is an independent story and should not be linked to The Blood of Youth. In this timeline, SMY and SCH will never become enemies.
So please don’t skip this drama just because someone said “they’ll end up killing each other anyway.” This drama has a happy ending.
❤️You don’t need to watch the other two dramas first to understand this one. Many of us watched it without seeing the others. The main characters in this drama only appear as supporting characters in the other two, while those dramas focus on different characters who mostly do not appear here. The main storylines are separate, this one only focus on the assassin organization. So you can watch this drama independently.
Finally, I truly hope viewers who are interested won’t miss this masterpiece, and won’t be misled by the unfair ratings on MDL. In my view, it should be at least 8.8. The ratings in China are very high.
Glad I didn't drop this, because the first few episodes were very confusing for me because there's just too much…
Su Muyu believes he likes Bai Hehuai, but his feelings are really a projection of his desire for a "normal" and ideal future. She represents everything beautiful from the world he longs for but doesn't belong to: kindness, peace, and light. When he's with her, he can briefly forget he's an Umbrella Ghost of Blood River. Actually, Changhe is more important than her in Muyu's heart.
