The characters see him as bad, the audience see him as bad- no backstory, romantic yearning nor motivation will endear him to us. That is okay. Your emotions are to be focused on other characters as you wish them free from him. Our MC might simply be a tragic character who lives forever with the ML, leaving the viewers frustrated. That is okay.

A "happy ending" where they are together in the end IS a tragedy, is it not? I feel nuance is becoming a lost art. We don't have to trust nor like our main characters. We can look at the flow of the writing, the sound design, the lighting and know what they're telling us to think and feel- but know we shouldn't. In countries without heavy censorship, writers aren't obligated to have their works be bound by any morality nor ethical rules where good triumphs and evil is punished.
