On Ju-on: The Curse 2 Dec 28, 2024
Impressively, "Ju-on: The Curse 1&2" were shot together in just 9 days, with some recycled footage from the first movie to maintain a similar duration of around 70 minutes each. Although the opening act suffers from this, the story continues well beyond that, even if it's slightly less impactful than the first.

An innovative supernatural horror that departs from conventional tropes, employing methodical psychological elements to gradually unsettle viewers. Its impact was pivotal during the late 90s to early 00s J-Horror boom, introducing iconic horror villains now staples in international horror culture. The sequel is essential to fully appreciate the story.

Title Senbazuru Spoiler
The movie initially seems like a fun, sporty, zero-to-hero story. However, about two-thirds in, it pivots to the tragic aftermath of the atomic bomb, devastating a 12-year-old girl's health until her untimely death. Audiences are left with a poignant message from the filmmakers: may another manmade disaster never occur again.

On Birds Without Names Dec 9, 2024
When the characters aren't being despicable, they act illogically, making it difficult to empathise with any of them except Towako's sister. Essentially, the film's message is people don't appreciate what they have until it's gone.

On Sing, Salmon, Sing! Nov 23, 2024
Title Sing, Salmon, Sing! Spoiler
A comedic and meaningful tale about a high school choir member who naively hogs the spotlight and doesn't fully harmonize with the group. She misunderstands that doing her best doesn't necessarily mean looking her best. Her inattentive ways lead to challenges she must overcome. Music, after all, is a powerful form of expression that can be drastically altered by the slightest nuance.

On It's a Summer Film Nov 17, 2024
Title It's a Summer Film Spoiler
I had high expectations for this film. A light-hearted tale about high school students making a movie for their school festival is a fantastic and simple premise with a lot of promise. Barefoot, the main protagonist, exudes enthusiasm for samurai movies, and her excitement is contagious, as are the charming and unique characters she introduces. There's a cute, albeit self-inflicted rivalry in Barefoot's mind between her crew and the Film Club, adding a fun element of friendly competition. While this dynamic is enjoyable, an actual rivalry could have heightened the stakes and added tension.

Despite the film's strengths, it ultimately feels underwhelming due to unnecessary elements like time-travel and romance, which detract from the already strong premise. As a result, valuable time that could have been spent on the filmmaking process, character development, comedy, and real-world drama is lost. Ultimately, a film I expected to leave a strong impact turned out to be only moderately enjoyable.

On A Beloved Wife Nov 16, 2024
Feels like a nod to the screwball comedies of the 1930s and '40s without the nuance. The schtick resolves too early and unearnedly. The ending more or less resets the relationship rather than showing any lessons learned. It's an entertaining car crash, with the plot's ridiculous execution making Kaho's character seem added just for credibility.

On Samurai Marathon Nov 15, 2024
You'd think a film about samurai competing in a 36-mile marathon for a wish granted by their Daimyo would be more intense and exciting. However, it quickly becomes apparent this isn't the main agenda. Instead, it's about a misunderstanding caused by one of the Shogun's ninjas secretly monitoring the Daimyo for treason, leading to unfortunate consequences. Even with this twist, the experience feels underwhelming. A 'The Running Man'-esque film with samurais would've been more entertaining. That said, the performances are strong, there are some endearing characters, the princess's arc is relatively well-done, and the score is fantastic. On a side note, what was up with the CGI bear?

On Suicide Circle Nov 15, 2024
Though the tone is sometimes deliberately off-kilter to juxtapose the on-screen imagery, it mostly feels like an unnerving fever dream, with sequences reminiscent of 1981's 'Halloween II'. This likely divisive film is one I enjoyed both out of morbid fascination and for its cryptic social commentary.

On Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai Nov 15, 2024
Misleading title, as this season only covers the remaining question arcs, unlike the anime that includes all answer arcs. Still a fun continuation with answer arc fan service, likely never intended for adaptation.

On New Religion Nov 12, 2024
Title New Religion Spoiler
An interesting surrealist dystopian horror film that becomes about emotionally manipulating broken people into committing terrorism through photography. The horror is situational and free of predictable tropes. While not the most entertaining movie, it's a rewarding one-time watch.

On Onibaba Nov 10, 2024
Title Onibaba Spoiler
The cinematography is stunning in this lifelike historical drama. Set during war-torn medieval Japan, where survival demands constant vigilance and wits, the tone is intense. Committing heinous acts out of necessity avoids judgment, but when driven by fear, envy, or lust, there are inevitable consequences. These man-made principles, intended to maintain order, are often twisted for personal gain, as shown here. The movie lacks a traditional villain; instead, human nature itself is the antagonist, encapsulated in the closing line, "I'm a human being!" 8/10

On Kisaragi Station Nov 6, 2024
Everything about the film creates a chilling experience that lingers long after it's over. The clever POV use immerses the viewer in the action and makes logical sense. It's modest yet imaginative, with enough otherworldly intrigue to leave theorists salivating. The cruel twist ending and post-credits scene were notably unsettling. Admittedly, Haruna's lapse in judgement and hesitancy despite having foresight are dubious; nevertheless, I highly recommend ‘Kisaragi Station’ to any horror fan. 8/10.
