But why? lol I mean, I don't hate it a remake, it's just I think I'm holding out for a really decent MARS remake, but Asia just keeps remaking HanaDan. I love the series whatever country it comes out in. I guess to be fair Meteor Garden had pretty awful cinematography, and the acting was really pretty spotty in areas. I'm still gonna watch, and probably love it too :D
Yo, it's awesome that Alan Ko is in this! I only knew him for singing the OP for the drama "MARS"! Seriously it was hands down the best OP I've ever heard for a T-Drama to date! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qO_jSSmQaD4

Fair enough. I can see where you're coming from, I feel like a lot of dramas are over using cancer in the last few months, though I know that it's not new in dramaland. As far as out of ideas, though I didn't like the cancer myself, it seemed that he was fated to die a slow death so I guess the reason for the cancer-go-to. I suppose they could've just been together for the 5 years and they could've just had him hit by a car if they were determined to kill him off, but I think they were trying to expand on the strength of the relationships and do more character building, so in that way, I didn't think it was bad in that way. But again, I can see where you're coming from. Thanks for replying! :)
I have been into the 90's drama theme ever since Reply 1994 and Reply 1997. I finished watching A Good Way not…
Honestly other than taking place in the past and following the characters throughout the years, there isn't anything else it has in common. Maybe that's what you mean by setting, but the character development and plot is not the same. Just as the Reply series is told in the same way, the two shows are definitely different with different characters and different plot lines.

I'm not here to tell you you're wrong, but I am surprised that you found it to be THAT awful. What did you dislike about it? I felt the ending while not a happy one was definitely realistic and well written.

I wish that everyone that states "This sucks!", etc, would go into a bit more explanation. I know it's no ones job to do so, but I think that little bit would go a long way. I'm glad despite our misunderstanding that we could talk it out. I still may not understand you completely, but at least I see that your response isn't a baseless knee-jerk one. That's how a lot of the comments appear to be and why something that isn't meant as negative is more likely to be construed as such. I can relate that I'm cautiously optimistic, so I understand to a point where people are coming from. I guess it's just a bit frustrating to see so many people talk about how horrible the acting and whatnot will be, even before it comes out. I am more lenient in that I prefer to judge something based on its own merits rather than something that came before it. If we aren't open-minded, how can things change?

I'm hoping for people to at least give some insight into why they feel the way they do when it appears that they feel negatively towards the project. I apologized already for misinterpreting your intentions. Just because I'm conveying how I feel about the topic and asking you to clarify yours, doesn't mean I'm ultimately trying to change your opinions. Because that's all they are. Neither of us is right or wrong. It's our opinions and we're welcome to them, obviously. My whole point was not to argue, but to understand how the image, of something you've professed to love, could be ruined in any way by a few photos. Unfortunately, I'm still no closer to understanding; not that it's your job to change that. Perhaps if you could hear my actual tone it wouldn't come across as criticism and we could have a nice chat. Sorry to have bothered you, take care.

Regarding the looks of the characters. I'd much prefer someone who again captures the character. Arguably, none of the Asian actors look like the original characters from the manga/anime, so looks don't really matter. However, the Japanese Makino was too pretty, but got the character right. The Taiwanese Makino, again too pretty, and just did ok at capturing the character. The Korean Makino looked the part, but was just ok as well. Also, if I recall correctly, in the Korean version, Makino's boss was a man, and not even a woman. There were changes from the original story made in each remake, but it didn't destroy it. I was even pretty nervous about the Korean version when it came out because I'd seen the Taiwanese and Japanese versions first. I don't have proof that this will be a great remake anymore than someone who feels it will bomb. But I feel better not sweating the small stuff.

Before I get into replying to your comment, I want to be clear that I'm not trying to talk you out of your opinions, or change them (some people have been reading my comments as though I'm angry or something). Anyway, I can agree that there will differences that don't translate well, but I don't think it's as strict as you're saying. Even if they got rid of this entire cast and made them Asian, that doesn't mean they are going to capture the spirit of the characters. Further, none of the Asian actors look anything like the actual characters from the Manga, if anything, the US cast will have an easier time with the look. As long as the spirit of the characters and show is captured, I feel that's what is most important. I can't imagine it being worse that the Chinese/Hong Kong version that barely resembled the story... but it's ok, just because it's Asian?

For some reason my earlier reply didn't save. Anyway, I know you were referring to the cast, so you're saying a handful of pictures of actors has ruined the image of HyD for you? How? Because they're not all Asian? I'm asking, because I'm trying to better understand how these photos can so negatively affect something that I assume you love very much.

That's weird, I replied to this earlier, but my comment didn't seem to save. Anyhow, I am a part of the fan-base of the drama too. If your comment was not meant to be negative, then I can only call "internets" on it. To be fair, the way it's written while not meant to be negative, doesn't exactly sound supportive either. It seems that I've upset you without meaning to, I don't know you personally, therefore my comments are only based on your comment. It's hard to determine a person's "tone" when reading text, so perhaps you understand where I'm coming from now? I'm not only a long time fan of HyD but also a 10 year fan such as yourself... though I'm not sure how that has anything to do with patterns and the US remake?

I'm not judging it out of any morbid or negative curiosity though. It's something I just want to see. Your comment comes off as though people would only watch it to validate how bad they think it will be.
I don't even see how an American version of this could be made well without changing the whole story line. The…
I agree that cultures are different, and some things aren't easily translated, but I was hoping this person would explain something that a US version can't do. Changes have been made in all remakes, but didn't ruin the story.
Anyhow, I've seen plenty of US rom-com movies that are pretty innocent. There's kissing, but it doesn't go beyond that. I think some people are splitting hairs over the romance. The US can do cute and innocent. It's also not as though ALL asian dramas are cute and innocent either. That's why it comes off as a bit hypocritical when people use that as part of their argument.
Since we're talking about BOF, aside from the bullying, there's kidnapping and attempted rape and Domyoji even sexually harasses Makino.
Unless somethings changed recently, where did rich guys buying girls come from? I was talking about buying silence :p
i feel like every time America tries to remake another country's drama, it's bad. i mean, look at the US versions…
Even though there are bad US remakes, there are good ones too. For instance, I found that I liked the US version of The Office a LOT more funny than the UK version. The movie Clueless was a remake of Emma but I like them BOTH. Maybe those aren't the best examples, but I guess it's also a matter of opinion. I understand that US remakes have gotten it wrong a lot, but at the same time US remakes have gotten it right as well. The original of ANYTHING is likely to be far better because it's what people see first, so there's a nostalgic value attached to it that's hard to beat as well. I think it's all in how you approach remakes. Is it going to replace it's predecessors? No. Can it still be good even if it's not "better" than the original? Yes. Remakes are just that, someone re-envisioning something, not replacing it.
I don't see this going over well at all. Most Americans are used to having shows be on for years, and I just don't…
The US version isn't going to air on US TV, it's going to be a web series. While I'm used to the format of multiple seasons, I don't really agree with it. It usually hurts a show in the end because it's drawn out far too long. There have been some summer TV shows that were only 13 episodes long and that was it and I loved it. Just because the US audience is used to something, doesn't mean there isn't room for change. Sure, there are some people that may be resistant, but there's others, like myself, that would prefer a beginning and end and 1 or 2 seasons than something that drags on for years. The only exception may be for shows based on books.
