MLK: “Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate.”

Frantz Fanon: "Violence is man re-creating himself."

The age old question, is psychopathy inherited or you get it along the way, is the abuse cycle real? A person who was abused as a child will grow up to abuse their own children? Or will they learn through experience that they need to be better, or is their soul too broken to be repaired and healed, a warm touch of kindness can do miracles but it also can be a reminder of our grim reality, where we always experienced hate, abuse and utter loneliness where the skies have zero stars, so if I end up seeing 1 star, a light of hope, well that change my perspective of the darkness? After years of abuse and mistreatment with visible bystanders, can I trust anyone? Or will I become just like my abuser? Can people be dependent on the emotional and physical abuse if they have been receiving it for many years...
The drama does good in questioning and does good in answering a few.
If a child or an adult is brought up to understand that every thing can be punishable by physical violence, I feel pity for their psyche and hat cycle to be broken can be achieved by continues kindness that breaks the norms that the abused grew up in. Only then humanity will return to its course.
Isaac Asimov: "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent."
Emotional or psychological abuse may not leave physical marks, but just like any form of abuse it’s meant as a controlling tool, abuser use to manipulate and corner their victims, while psychological abuse aims at distorting someone’s reality making them feel they are unworthy marking them as a mere clone of their real existence.
How I hope these things remain in fiction as a remainder of what humans were.
But it’s on going, this drama might be fictional but these things happen every minute every day.

Music the heavy jazz and trumpets really added extremely well to the intensity

“Just because you smiled, it doesn’t change the sad reality.”
“You are testing me because you want to trust me, test me all you want, make me suffer all you want, I will never abandon you.”

“I don’t have a memory of hugging another human being, the only memory I have is of hugging a warm vending machine that was left on through the night”

Beauty in mundane things like mugs, cups, trees, buildings, lights, ropes, papers, kimonos, wall clocks and many other things that seem so insignificantly hanging around, but maybe they do have deeper meanings in our also mundane life.
With the shifting of times and changing in traditions from olden to modern, how can someone switch those ideals, it’s not like we are born with a switch going from traditional values to modern ones.
I really enjoyed everything about this movie, I’m glad I watched it.

When small talk was the lubricant that kept daily life moving smoothly, simple with a lot of kindness and just caring for one another.
Now small talk is seen as pretentious and conceit.

Even the title is worthy of praise “the bad sleep well” it sounds like there is no karma and everything is sinister.
This movie is going to the favorites as one of the best noirish noir films I’ve seen.
The ending is “chef’s kiss”.

A mentor student relationship like no other.
It tells of humanity through children and adults and the lowest depths of human existence.

The inevitable sadness of life caused by change, is the course in life we are all too familiar with, growing up and changing from a carefree child with no worries, to growing old and realizing the sad truth that our parents are even becoming older, the change that comes after a sudden misfortune.
Even good changes are followed by equal parts envy and misery.
Norika is now one of my favorite female leads and how she portrays her character, many smiles act as a mask to greater feeling behind them and how the mutual sacrifice of happiness from her and her dad shows what true familial love is about.
The Japanese etiquette of expressing how you really feel without saying a word or conveying action is excellently shown here.
You could know how everyone felt without the need for excessive dialogue.
What does a wedding dress really signify? Happiness? Or is it some form of “happiness” while accepting the oppressions that come along that era.

“Marriage may not mean happiness from the start. To expect such immediate happiness is a mistake. Happiness isn't something you wait around for. It's something you create yourself. Getting married isn't happiness. Happiness lies in the forging of a new life shared together. It may take a year or two, maybe even five or ten. Happiness comes only through effort.”

This is an epic that spans 6 decades, three men fleeing from China to Taiwan, while people looked familiar, it’s still a stranger among strangers in a strange world, displaced men trapped faraway in nostalgia for their home, the story flows effortlessly and the meaning of family and freedom is well delivered.
Dialogue is a bit dull on some parts.

Over ambitious burger commercial that dragged for 2 hours, with what seems like an assignment of a high schooler scribbled on a notepad got misplaced with the actual dialogue, then got eaten by a cat high on catnip which then proceeded to write the actual script.

“Life, although it may only be an accumulation of anguish, is dear to me, and I will defend it.” - Mary Shelley, Frankenstein

Immortality sounds good, but if we live forever then that removes the urgency for tomorrow, the need to do better and how we interact with each other.
If there is always a “tomorrow” then what motivates me to talk today, to interact with you guys now? Nothing.

Seobok sets the premise of these simple questions of the mortal vs immortal in an excellent story, we’ve seen many times but with enough heart to keep you engaged.
What makes us human? Is it the passage of time? Is it the memories?

Excellent comedy I mean if I were thinner, I’d get abs from laughing.
And how can someone come up with such stories is beyond me,
A housewife wrote a love story for the radio hour, and they kept rewriting the story for multiple reason which leads to the funniest scenarios.
Fast paced but well connected, character growth is well written and even with few slapstick comical moments, it’s still a favorite,

Intense movie about obsessive love and the loss of youth due to time, can their love withstand the troubling times?
Actually this is probably the only movie that has Tiananmen events of 1989 covered from the students point of view. Banned in China!
