I like the authenticity and style of Ruyi much more than Yanxi Palace. In Yanxi Palace, Ying Luo is constantly speaking directly to her superiors without first being spoken to. That is completely out of place during that period and would have resulted in death or corporal punishment.

I agree that the story doesn't seem to be continuous. I think it's considered a sequel only in the sense that 1) it's written by the same author, and 2) Legend of Zhen Huan is about this emperor's father.

The actress who plays the empress is from Hong Kong, so she is speaking her lines in Cantonese. The language is very different from Mandarin and the mouth movements will not match the voiceover. Also, she was never known as a serious actress in her heyday. She was more of a starlet who frequently appeared in the gossip mags.

There are flashbacks later on that show the brothers loved each other despite the Empress. It's important to remember the moral framework that XF and RY act in. Filial piety (love & and respect toward one's parents) is supposed to be more important that brotherly love or romantic love. XF tried to talk to his mother about stopping her schemes, but he would be condemned by society if he raised his hand against her. In that way, what RY did to usurp the throne is considered a very great sin.

One of the previews showed him as taking over the overlord position in the demon world, so pretty sure they followed the book on this part. i'll be so sad if he marries SH!

I agree that the otp have great chemistry. I love how playful and gently teasing they are with each other. Although I wish their kissing had more sizzle.

RY is better at politics and setting up alliances. That will become apparent in a few more episodes. Whereas XF is known as a hot head and powerful fighter, RY has a reputation as thoughtful and steady. XF even says that he is not as intelligent as his older brother.

They don't complete the wedding ceremony. XF disrupts the ceremony before they are officially husband and wife.

But based on the current pacing, I think we probably have at least 8 episodes before they get to the wedding.

I know! My heart has been breaking for RY during these last few episodes. The empress is just evil!

There's a scene early in the show (ep 9) when JM first returns to the Flower World and has a dream about encountering a giant frost flower bud. There's a girl trapped inside the flower bud who asks for help breaking out. She wants to tell someone that she likes him. Pretty sure that's when JM fell for XF.

Epilogue 5 came out earlier this year about YM's trial in the mortal world. It wasn't in the original book.

We're only half way through the drama, so they can still get lots more views. 加油!

Ikr! RY has had such a sad childhood, feeling like his mother didn't love him and hating himself for being a dragon instead of a fish. He's still a little boy looking for unconditional love and acceptance.

I'm on ep 22 and having a hard time liking Yin Luo. She's too calculating in her relationship with everyone around her for my taste. I loved the Chu Qiao character because she was fighting for a greater cause, but somehow Yin Luo doesn't resonate with me. I know she's trying to find her sister's murderer, but her other interactions just seem petty and vindictive because she's so underhanded and manipulative.

In the book, he's really scheming, but I think the tv drama is trying to make him less evil and calculating. I think he had a genuine relationship with XF in the beginning.
