I tend to hate adaptations of a tv show. I didn't like Life on Mars like anybody, i dropped TWOM because I did…
Dexter was like one of those series I will never forget and to me an adaptation can not replace the original version but I find it interesting to see even so and yeah asian dramas are great with thriller most of the time !
I think it depends to me for example I was not fond of the adapation of Suits... But I really liked Life On Mars and it was a great surprise (I remember I saw it on the " coming soon " drama's list and by curiosity I checked to see if it was indeed an adaptation or something else and now after watching it I hope they would adapt " ashe to ashe " too who explain the purgatory thing in Life on Mars )
I've never seen Dexter, but reading the synopsis I could definitely see it getting adapted. Crime/serial killer…
What was really interesting with Dexter is how the character was likeable when you know he was a serial killer perhaps because he was killing only killers or bad people ? Or perhaps because of what he saw when he was a baby and so you know why he is like this ? Like he is " mess up " but try to control himself and that is why he obeys hi adoptive's father's advices about how he must use his killing's envy against bad people if he can not control himself
I think it really interesting when a character is " grey" not really good or bad but really human
Yes that would be great !
I just thought about " Heaven " too, I do not know if you know about it because it is old too : " When FBI Special Agent Audrey Parker is dispatched to the small town of Haven, Maine, on a routine case, she finds herself becoming increasingly involved in the return of "The Troubles", a plague of supernatural afflictions that have occurred in the town at least twice before. "
What is intersting in this serie was the fact some people in the town get suddently a unique power regarding their hobbys/way of living + and Audrey Parker is also linked to all of this (well I do not want to spoil it but there were intersting twists so I think it would be great as a Kdrama)
I think I want to see a lot of remake in korean dramas because I want to see how they handle some aspect and I am really fond of korean version most of the time I find it really interesting
I never watched Outlander but a friend explain to me how great the book are so I think I will read it to try !
As a remake as a korean drama I really want to see " Dexter " ( well there are dramas close to this like Kill it but I did not like it and coming soon " flower of evil " but I means really a drama where the main character is a cop + a serial killer of bad guys )
And " My name is Earl" where a guy wins the loto, lost his ticket in a car's accident and because of that he questions his way of living. Then he makes a list with all the people he wronged and decides to find them and help them in order to " heal " his karma) The serie is about how the karma can impact your life and I think a remake as a korean drama would be really funny to see I think. I do not think it would be especially popular but it would give some frash air7
Edit : The remake I did not expect was " Life on Mars " I watched it years ago ( the british version ) and when I saw the korean version I was so delighted !
I think it is the first time where I will drop a drama because it becomes too much frustrating to watch : usually I still watch fully a drama even if I do not like it but here it is really hard to continue any further.
I thought it would be a funny drama where characters would be after the money at first but gradually become better persons but in fact not at all and it becomes worse. I think the only character I liked was the smart nephew because he was not after the money but at some point it was ridiculious how he does not noticed the lawyer is fake ? From the get go he knew this woman was a conwoman when he saw her stealing the suitcase and she makes a lot of mistakes with the laws so how comes he is blind about her half of the drama ???
I will explain because the resume is not fully right :
- The grandma indeed " abandoned her family 50 years ago " (or more like she ran away because she was raped by her husband's bestfriend and then her husband and mother-in-law were abusing her because they thought she had an affair, it is really despicable and I just do not understand how they can include the man who raped her in "comical "'s moments like he is part of the family just WTF!? )
The grandma will return in Korea because she is sick and wants to give her money to the children she had abandonned. However she has also an adoptive son who is secretly after her money with his birth sister (the grandma does not know the birth siter because her adoptive's son was contacted when his birth sister was sick and that is how they reunite).
So in one hand we have the adoptive son and his birth sister trying to manipulate the grandma : the sister pretends to meet her by chance and then becomes her lawyer when she knows NOTHING about the law)
In another hand there are the grandma's birth family : her son, her daughter, her two grandaughters, her grandson and her grandgranddaughter + the son in law and so on.
And so the grandma stars a bunch of tests for them to pass in orter to choose an heir. -
But frankly do not expect something really interesting and dynamic it is just plenty boring and frustracting all along... When you think characters can not be worse it is worser for example the younger sister is also abused by her in-law and her husband like the grandma's story was not enough ? And the adoptive son is just a pain in the ass because he wans always more money and at some point he forces her sister to continue her lies despite the fact he knows she is in love with the smart nephew. When the smart nephew comes to talk to him he keeps thinking he will break his sister's heart ( wtf is this logic dude ? You are the one forcing her to do awful things and you know her lies will have bad consequences with her love so do not blame the smart nephew for broking her heart later it is normal is someone lie to you, you lost trust for this person LOGIC so blame youserlf instead )
Okay, after this I will forever have a thing for Sungjae playing a role that ends up being some superpowerful…
Somehow I was expecting Kang Bae would stay in that state a bit longer in order for Weol Joo to talk with the sacred tree about the past and resolve his grudge... I feel like the last episode was not right, it seemed messy I was really awaiting for a badass fight against the evil spirit with the sacred tree + a bittersweet ending with Weol Joo and Mister Gwi being reincarnated. Somehow the drama prepared us for that and usually I am not fond of bittersweet ending but here I think the story would have been better with it because the happy end seemed fake and forced in my point of view (one of the example is how Weol Joo did not know Mister Gwi took her debt and how he come back to " life " like nothing happened was a shame).
But I think I am in fault because when I am watching a drama currently airing I have the habit to get too much excited for the next episode and thinking about how things will end haha I do not know I feel like the moment were not well timed... For example when Weol Joo explained to Mister Gwi he has a son seemed quite off I thought he would learn the news by himself. Or somehow I was expecting a crazy twist like what if Weol Joo already knew from the start Kang Bae was her son and so that is why she makes him work for her to keep him close to her and in fact she saw all his past lives but always failed to save his life ? It would have been so interesting to see Kang Bae's past lifes ! I feel like the drama was perfect except the last episode.
This drama is fun and sweet if you do not seek something serious and if you like the characters. For now I love it it is quite funny it is just a shame they did not make Nan Gil as a lost brother toward Na ri ? That would have been more interesting and focusing on the family aspect than over a useless romance in my point of view because they seem like sibling and I love how Nan Gil plays the father to nargue at her... + I feel like it would be interesting to see a trio brother/sister/potential lover (Nan Gil, Na Ri, Deok Bong); their chemistry are great in my opinion ! Yes it is weird but fun and so far I like the characters even the shitty boyfriend odly ?
See! How can a drama like this get 8.0 and a drama like Mystic Pop-up Bar get 8.7??? It’s crazy! To me, this…
I finished Mystic pop up bar and it was so good I want to watch something similar and I fond this drama and After reading your comment I think I will like it !
BTW this recap is doing a very bad job at reviewing. You will learn that JCW might be in a relationship with his…
So like you know I only watched episode 1 and half of episode 2 so far (well more now but still) and I feel like the girlfriend is manipulative the way she asks him help or does not confront him directly is strange. And she avoided him when he asked about meeting her parents...
For now I only watched the first episode and a part of episode 2 and I just can't get into the main characters…
Seem like we are watching the same dramas haha ! (Well in the moment I try most of the current dramas because I am bored and kdramas are like a drug to me to thriller me )
I dunno if I will continue this one so please tell me tomorrow if episode 4 is better ?
Yes at least in King Monarch there were more than two main leads but it felt like Yi Gon and Tae Eul was the two super main leads... I think I prefer when the two main lead -and I means in romantic dramas- have less romantic moments together but more " meaningful " than just random moments and I felt that too in King Monarch. Like you said, and you totally found the perfect example, she seems like a second female lead with tricky behaviors...
The story can be so-so or/and cliché as heck I do not care honestly I am more on the " character pulling the story "than the other way around. If I can not empathize with them it is a lost cause.
Mystic pop-up bar was so good I just did not like the last episode because of the editing and because I was awaiting a goodbye scene between them (Happy ending are not always the good ending, I think it would have been more meaningful that way.) But it was really worth it this drama was a bomb really I am still watching some past moments because I am smirking like an idiot knowing they are indeed a family -the underpants moments and their faces haha)
Gosh the subtitles are taking a long time to load up on the site that I normally watch it in. So I was impatient…
For now I only watched the first episode and a part of episode 2 and I just can't get into the main characters so I want to drop it but I like the supporting characters... However it is really hard to watch because of course the drama is centered around the two main leads so I think I will just drop it ( I will not make the same mistake like with Monarch King when I thought I would end up to like the two main leads ).
I just do not love how they make Choi Dae Hyun 100 % as a pusshover especially when Jung Saet Byul is doing what she wants in his Family's store and when his girlfriend uses him when she needs him.
Jung Saet Byul is too much rude to me with everyone + they add the fact she is after Choi Dae Hyun like a madwoman... It is perhaps sexist to say but I feel like they thought it was okay because it is a girl but to me it is not; I find it a bit creepy especially when you know Choi Dae Hyun is easily manipulate. And a lot of scene are just disturbing when for example she slaps him/punchs him in the face because he was dreaming of his girlfriend ? I know the purpose here is to be funny so I think it is perhaps just not my kind of humor...I dunno. She just seems like an obsessive girl to me who just saw a good looking guy one day and decided he must be hers. I think I would have accepted it if he had done something big for her to move her but he just told her to quit smocking and frankly she is in love with him because of his looks/ first impression of a good boyfriend that is all
I find it really funny when in drama they use other dramas's as reference. In the first episode it was the same doctor from the Fiery Priest no ? And they use the famous ost from the fiery priest too no long after
Samsin was one of my favorite character : I bet she knew that Kang Bae was Weol Joo's son after all she is the one giving post-pregnant-dream. And two things : She said to Mister Gwi she let Weol Joo sign the contract because she knows her too well and I do not think she was talking about just her fiery temper + when she saw Kang Bae just after that she said " It is true your are handsome " with emotive eyes
Editing in ep 12 was a bit rough. The transition between scenes wasn't smooth. There were also many plot holes…
So far the only drama where the end pleased me was " The Guest " ; I thought the second drama with a great end would be Mystic pop up bar but no... I often feel like I am bretrayed in the last episode of a Kdrama. And here the perfect example. Until episode 11 it was so good and I was so excited to see a badass Kang Bae but the last episode feels off to me too and I thought it was because I was expecting too much when I saw the comments.
I agree with what you said, the editing was really strange : for example the evil spirit was deadly wounded by Mister Gwi but the moment after he is in Kang Bae's dream trying to kill him ? Like What ? How? When ??? And like you said Weol Joo was crying Mister Gwi " death " and totally ignoring the fact his son was targeted when the moment before she was so worried about him she was jsut staring blankly at him ? Sorry If I sound rude but I get a bad taste after the last episode I was really excited about it until I saw it... I feel like in Kdrama often they have good idea and start the story strong but they do not know how to end things properly. And It is not because of the 12 episodes formats they had enough to make a great end but they lost precious minutes with useless flashback or stares (at least they should have give us flashback of all the moments between Kang Bae and his parents when they did not know his identity.
What bothered me :
The characters were changed in the last episode just for the sake of the plot and it was not necessary : -
- Weol Joo was strong and had a fiery temper, the drama makes her soulless in the last episode her temper was a big par of her. She was just standing there with a frown.
- Mister Gwi makes silly mistakes TWICE : He did not recognized the evil spirit possessing the death and in the last episode he was easily tricked by a false information. It was so strange because they show him in the previous episodes as a super cop with great powers so once again HOW ?
- Kang Bae said he already know about the identity of his parents... Wtf I was soa waiting his reaction about it and they make him got his memory and reaction off cameras ?
A lot of wtf moments :
Mister Gwi and Weol Seem suddently weak, Yeo Rin helps them without asking much even if she thinks they are from the CIA it was really what the fuck. Especially they forget her midway lmao when I thought she would reapperead to kiss Kang Bae.
Mister Gwi and Weol Joo hiding when the evil guy is harming Kang Bae ! Ok it was to show they hear that he knows but it felt so off how can parents let their child be harmed that way without reactions until it is too late ?
Odly the characters had much more chemistry before the revelation that Kang Bae it their son and I think it is because actors felt it was rushed so it was hard for them to get emotional when it was suddently bad written
Too much " sad moments " without being well done : The first scene where Kang Bae cries all alone and they go back in time to explain was not intriguing for me becuase I coul easily guess what happened. Mister Gwi " death" was useless really... The scene in the abandonned building when the evil spirit tries to harm Kang Bae, Mister Gwi tries to stop him and Weol Joo is just staring. The stairway moment was truly a pain to watch because Weol Joo make a long speech again it was useless because the vilain was not deep enough and I was okay with it so why they tried to make him seems deep I just want to see him evil. Finally the " hole "of the staircase was just a joke, nah ? Mister who is alive without explanation wtf Only two minutes to see them reunite The morale seems forced about how life is wonderful blablabla
Sorry If I seem rude again but it because I loved this drama so much so right now I am really dissapointed, but it was just one episode who was bad ( but of course it is the last episode...)
Frankly my perfect ending I was expecting : A badass fight between Kang Bae/ Mister Gwi/ Weol Joo vs evil spirit ---> The evil spirit is annihilated but Kang Bae becomes sick and his power is worse ---> Weol Joo and Mister Gwi must go in his dream's world to help him and they find out he is their son because he has memories of his past life + memories of the tree ---> They save Kang Bae but must part away but they have still hald the episode to say goodbye (I was hopping a " Goobye " like in Tunnel where they keep one episode to say proper goodbye and it was sad but beautiful) ----> a final hint about Mister Gwi and Weol Joo being reincarnated and END
Ending could have been expanded a bit but I enjoyed the show.
Yes I was a bit angry they did not show much interaction between Kang Bae / Weol Joo-Mister Gwi together after they know they are a family. The last episode was messy to me. Here a few example : One moment you see the evil spirit fataly wounded but the moment after you see him in Kang Bae's dream trying to kill him, The evil spirit take hald the episode just to think " oh I should kidnap their son ", The good guy are so dumb at the end they get into the evil spirit's trap so easily and for example when Kang Bae was an hostage Weol Joo was just looking at him without doing much when she had a fiery temper all along ? , Yeo Rin who help them without asking them what is going even if she thinks they are CIA agents it was a bit too much, and a lot of others moments, Mister Gwi who died and come back without explanation, ....
I am really hard to be please by the ending often especially when the episodes before were really good and suddently it becomes strange you have the impression the persons doing it changed ? But Yeah it was good, it is just the editing felt off in the last episode
Ep. 11 was awesome. The ending got me screaming. I don't want this drama to end.
I love when people are connected in stories ( because fate or whatevers )especially when it is well done because now I want to rewatch the drama knowing they are indeed a family by " blood " that is even better
11 of 12 episodes now. This is not only good in cast & storyline. The quality in this drama is top notch as well.…
I am wondering the same about the pre-producing, I think it is better and thanks to that we are sure to get the episodes even if there are a problem later on + top notch quality like you said I see the difference
