Well, popular dramas with high ratings tend to give people expectations. I would just recommend that you keep the genre in mind, and realize that not all highly rated dramas will be loved by everyone (because taste differs).
That said, the fact that you started off by labeling this an "overhyped" drama might already provide the answer you're looking for, especially if you have a phobia of them. π
I'd say if, in the past, you have liked fluffy, cozy rom-coms with what many critics call "cringey" (silly, at times over dramatic) humor, romances about fated lovers that are darling and sweet but would never happen in reality, have enjoyed the FL actress in other dramas (like Extraordinary You, her acting here is similar), enjoy dramas/plots/filming like True Beauty, Extraordinary You, and somewhat nostalgic dramas for an older Kdrama time period, and don't demand a 100% plot-hole-proof script (nor are you crazy against serial murderer/kidnappers showing up in your romance drama to move the plot forward), then you have a pretty good chance of enjoying this. :) I thought the leads were adorable and the chemistry was very good. It's a very warm, whole-hearted drama, and pure fantasy.
On a rewatch, and I just realized Shin Hye Seon is in this! I watched this the first time before I knew who she was. π I also just noticed this time around that some of them use their real names. Why is that? So random and strange (also, apart from the main two boys, Young Woo and Lee Kang Joo are my favorite--gems!)
This drama is somehow so lovable despite the most implausible school scenarios ever. I think it's because the spirit of the thing is right, but the mechanics are all wrong. π
And the lead high schoolers are like lost puppies, so you can't help but love them! While I really like that this drama tries to show WHY kids act out the way they do, at the same time, I still think it gives them too much credit. All of these kids are, deep down, sweet, or at most, well-meaning. They truly want good things, while some kids in real life don't. Sure, they yearn for love and care like all humans, but that doesn't mean they're all little angels deep down inside (which is what this drama seems espouse). It's idealistic to me, but I can enjoy it as school fantasy. π
It's a happy ending, but the implied relationship is very quick and literally the last scene; there's a kiss,…
Well, the writing, plausibility and plot is a bit of a stretch and not the best, but the acting is good and the characters are lovable. It's not terrible, and the story is pretty snappy so it doesn't feel like a slog. It's sweet, but by no means a masterpiece (or realistic). π
It's a happy ending, but the implied relationship is very quick and literally the last scene; there's a kiss, but it's a second of contact and then the camera pans out. π
Hae Seong finds the gold in the floorboards of his attic after the chairwoman gets locked up for murder and everyone is convinced the gold is gone--his dad did find it after all!
I finally finished this! A cute, fun, silly romp with some dark scenes here and there and a crazy villain thrown in (would have loved to see less of Seo Myeong Ju in the last few episodes); I thought all of the sweet characters were quite lovable!
Don't think too hard to make it all make sense (cause it won't on closer scrutiny π ), and enjoy!
9.4 is too much. There were many things wrong with this series. Many things. Especially how they portrayed the…
Isn't Jeju traditionally matriarchal, though? If so, this dynamic is cultural, to some extent.
I haven't seen this drama yet, but I think it'd be refreshing to see a husband serve his wife voluntarily, selflessly and sacrificially, and have it portrayed in media as beautiful; many, many wives have done it for millenia, and we've seen THAT dynamic portrayed in media a lot already. π Let the hubby have a go at it!
I haven't seen this drama yet, but without even watching it, I get the impression you had a bone to pick before even starting. π
If this drama says that life, love and family is messy, imperfect, beautiful, life-changing and challenging, then it seemed to hit the nail on the head...
This show is consistently ranking above 90% (9.0) everywhere! If you still are not watching this by now, what…
I'm not ready to cry that much! π I really want to watch it with my sister, but she is currently expecting a baby boy in a few months, and I know the MC loses a son (my impression is when he's quite young?) at some point, and I think it might hit too close to home right now so I don't want to suggest it yet.
Sort of, I mean there's a lot of male friendship and loyalty and deep bonds. But it's not like "buddy" bromance, it's like friends that partner together to uphold justice because they care about the same things and want good for the empire and those they love (and those who were wronged in the past). If you watch you'll know what I mean.
I want to watch this on the plane so I have something to pass the time, but based on the comments I'm afraid it'll be too embarrassing--because I'll probably be a weepy mess! π
I've never seen drama score GO UP to a 9.2 after airing (I guess besides TW). I guess I have to watch this, and I really do miss Bo Gum!
Nirvana In Fire 2, Castaway Diva and Reply 1988 are the only dramas that have made me ugly cry while watching them, but it looks like this one might beat them! I got teary just watching clips...so, I'm done for. π
