Yep! Well done!! That's exactly what I got out of it too. I think the whole story so far is pretty decent in set…
Ikr! They did a very good mix of fantasy, romance, horror, action and a bit of comedy which is needed to lighten up the mood a bit. The transition from a serious tone to a funny one is smooth. Nothing feels out of place. Idk why people's first thought is to compare it to Goblin but it really has nothing to do with it. I guess it's the lack of fantasy genres with Korean folklore dramas that make them think like that.
Thank you, I feel like I could have done better but since English isn't my first language I struggle to write long coherent texts. But uninformed opinions annoy me a bit so I hope this will somehow help them understand better or help those discouraged by the negativ comments to not give up the show yet.
I understand many people have different opinions, and I respect each of them however it would be nice if you could base your opinion on something that is true and don't go around writing fake takes just because you didn't get something because you forgot one detail or two. For those who didn't get the show until now and say that it's inconsistent or messy, maybe the following will help you:
1) Yi Yeon: A nine-tailed fox who used to be on of the four reigning spirits, gave up his post to save Ah Eum and give her the fox bead so he could recognise her when she's reincarnated (It's still unclear when he gave up his post: before going to kill Imoogi/save Ah Eum or when he went to stop her from crossing Samdo River). For some reasons that we haven't seen yet, Ah Eum couldn't be reincarnated so he made a deal with the higher-ups and is now serving them to kill the bad spirits so that Ah Eum can be reborn again. He doesn't hesitate to harm humans to get what he wants but he still isn't completely insensitive (as shown in episode 5 when he helps Ji Ah to solve the sister's resentment). He doesn't care about what spirits do either, whether they kill a human is none of his business. All he does is follow Paluipa's orders.
2) Ji Ah: Ah Eum's reincarnantion. Lost her parents at a young age. Convinced that they are still alive and that they were taken away by a supernatural being, she's desperatly trying to save them. So desperate that she started to work as a producer for a show dealing with supernatural phenomenons, so desperate that she's ready to gamble with her life at stake (yes she's reckless for jumping off the balcony but hello?? She isn't Mary Sue, she's gonna be a character with flaws whether you like or not). And it wasn't completely foolish though she did risk a lot for it. She knew Yi Yeon was the one who saved her 21 years ago because she recognized his voice when she interviewed him in the hospital. She also knows foxes must repay the favour when they're indebted so all of it was done to have Yeon owe her a favor. Yes, it isn't well written, they could have done better, but it still makes sense and more importantly it sucessfully laid the base for the next episodes without dragging it for too long. Most dramas I've seen have the problem to start a show well but then rush it at the end with no logical flow because they don't have enough episodes left. At least, in TOTNT, we can hope for a good ending and not a wtf ending.
Ji Ah also happens to have Imoogi's parts remaining in her soul, with which Imoogi can possess her. It seems that whenever she gets close to him, he gets a better control of her as shown at the end of ep 2 and in the middle of episode 3. He used that moment to talk to Yeon. Later, Ji Ah gets hurt when the shaman tries to kill her and some of her blood spills in the well, completing the final step needed for Imoogi's reincarnation. Then the villagers serve as his meal because he must be very hungry after being reborn. While Imoogi and his servant leave the island in secret, Ji Ah and Yeon also return to Seoul bc they can't continue their investigation, so Ji Ah asks her detective friend for help and tells him about the vanishing effect. We still don't know why another island was brought up in the story but I feel like that and what happened since 1954 on the Imoogi island will somehow be revealed later.
Fast forward, Yeon and Ji Ah spend some time together and get close especially after the ghost incident. During that, Ji Ah cries and reveals the fox bead hidden inside her, confirming that she's indeed Ah Eum. Yeon falls in love even more and continues to collect clues to find Ji Ah's parents and he learns that he needs to meet the governor to find out more. He takes Ji Ah to the governor's place and asks her to wait for him while he needs to check something, except Ji Ah rents a hanbok and takes a look around the village. Yeon sees her and is shocked because he thought she's Ah Eum (well she's technically is but he didn't know Ji Ah put on a hanbok and his first reaction seeing her would be to think about Ah Eum obviously) though I guess he already knew she was just Ji Ah, when they stood on the bridge, he still couldn't resist the urge to kiss her because he waited for 600 years to see her and seeing her in a hanbok triggered his feelings.
Fast forward to the fight with the governor, the latter notices Ji Ah's feelings for Yeon and she does admit that although she used him to find her parents, she still ended up falling in love with him. Unfortunately Yeon gets sucked in the fortune teller's bag (idk if it had a name or not but I forgto it), Ji ah has to choose between following Rang, their only lead to Imoogi, or helping Yeon. She chooses the latter. Keep in mind that she doesn't know the existence of Paluipa that could potentially help Yeon without her sacrificing anything nor does she know about the importance of the fox bead inside her. She gives up the fox bead because at that moment, there's no time left for her to think about what the hell a fox bead is doing inside her and about the consequences if she ever looses it, all she thinks about is to get Yeon back because she can't do anything without him but also because he gets in danger every time because of her and she needs at least to do this to help him when he needs it. She's lying when she says that Yeon was rather cheap, to hide the fact that she gave away the fox bead to buy him. If she knows that foxes must repay their debts she obviously also knows fox beads mean a lot to foxes. But unbeknownst to her, the fox bead was actually protecting her from Imoogi. But hey! this is actually good for the plot because it will help the story to advance.
3) Yi Rang: I'll try to keep his story as short as possible because I already wrote a whole freaking novel. So long story short, Rang was a child when Yeon left the mountain so he had to survive on his own while humans were chasing him down. He had to endure it for hundreds of years. He changed and killed a lot of people which resulting on him ending up first on the list of spirits Yeon must kill to get Ah Eum back. But Yeon doesn't kill him and only leaves him injured to trick the higher ups that he killed him. Rang gets saved by Immogi's servant and he probably is working for him to repay his debt while also torturing humans because he hates them. Why Yeon doesn't kill him? Simply because he hasn't received the order to do so from the higher ups who also seems to have weird criterias when it comes to choosing what spirit to kill next, but it isn't my business since it isn't important to the story.
I think I covered almost everything that happened in the 6 episodes, or should I say the most important parts and the ones that caused confusion in the comment section. This is my first time commenting and I'm aware I'm the only one having a whole ass novel but I still hope it helps you somehow. Obviously with everything I explained there are still lots of questions left but we didn't even reach half of the show so there's plenty more left to tell. Other that that, the actors have an amazing chemistry, I don't often get crazy over ships but somehow Jiah x yeon has me fangirling over them 24/7 and this never ever happened for me when watching a drama. Not to mention that the acting of he main leads is very convincing.
