Anybody ever see the movie ‘Widows’ (2018) by Steve McQueen? Have to admit i had an almost Elizabeth Debicki moment in Ep 21 when Zigu tried to gain entrance to see the Emperor.
He made a deal with the CP to obtain an ingredient he needs to cure her. He has to confess and surrender in exchange.…
Which then lurches the plot forward, into (pretty much) delicious angst territory - i use ‘lurch’ because that’s what the writing/pacing of this show has been up till now. The only thing keeping it still floating is the fantastic performances by LXY, WJY and Baron Chen and even BWJ (being a really good meek murder puppy!)
It's starting to get interesting again. That fight scene in the rain was so cool, and this drama really shines…
Yeah, same here. It’s better when the stakes are high (see Eps 13-15) that’s when the plot actually moves forward and the characters’ development are more compelling.
:) contrary to popular opinion here, I actually like this character :) he’s unpredictable. He grew on me after the last weiqi game with the emperor when he beat him. That was when he began show signs of a backbone and by the time he outwitted the CP in the matter of the 10 beauties (minus Meilin) i was convinced he was going to be unpredictable :) that soft deceptively meek demeanor hides a ruthless iron will. I never read the novel, so i don’t know if he will ultimately be a help, a friend or a hindrance and enemy to Jinghe and Meilin and ultimately Da Yan but i continue to be entertained by him in this series :)
Right. Finally ep 22 was interesting after so many mediocre episodes only to end on a cliffhanger and 1 ep a day…
Yes! Intensity and tension ramped up again slowly from Ep 20 and it seems to be picking up pace again in this Ep like it did Ep 13-15 .. interesting in that these Eps have the Weibei jun (army) involved in some way

About that deal with CP… I wonder .. on the one hand it appears to be sheer romantic idiocy, on the other hand it could also have been a tactical ploy to get himself directly into the inner palace (Yangming palace?) and gambling on being given a sword to kill himself at the execution grounds… since we’re already aware of MRJH’s intention to storm the palace, i was thinking ‘here we go!’ when CP contemptuously tossed the sword at him..
Haha me too! That was really the peak of hypocrisy, or is it not even hypocrisy but is he so self-delusional idk
He’s been writing scriptures assiduously for Luomei despite killing 100000 denizens of Qingzhou and destroying the Weibei jun.. man actually is convinced even heaven is on his side 🙄
Agree with you. Very well executed. The last time I saw good fighting scenes like decades ago when HK period movies…
Yes! night fight scenes are rare but really effective when done well and so appropriately utilised in such a desperate context as they did here. Meilin had to keep them distracted for as long as she could to give Zigu as much time as the incense stick could burn!
I want the show to be successful badly for Liu Xueyi. he deserves more leading roles with good scripts
@Drama Tea Same! I’m half watching for the execution of the entire story viz a viz his (very sizeable) talent, and the other half watching the response to it and esp his performance by the industry and audience at large.
Oh what a cracker of an Ep! Tightly paced, minimal exposition, and a terrific fight sequence with Meilin where the stakes continue to be high ✊! Edge of seat Ep all of 45 mins for me!
Oh LiuXueyi! What an actor and what a voice..! He held all of Jinghe’s desperation and anguish tightly leashed by a steely breathtaking resolve..!
Just exhilarating to see Weibei Jiang Jun (the General of Wei Bei) strategising and back in action amongst his men, as he was in Ep 14. It’s so easy to be beguiled by the beautiful Third Prince, San Wang Ye, in his magnificent robes, but i love it when we are reminded that he is first and foremost at the core of a steely heart, the General of Wei Bei, 武 Wu of the battlefield masked by 文 Wen of the court.

That was slow torture…that scene … oh my heart!

Here’s hoping Ep 23 sticks its landing!
